Quartet Records is very proud to present its two new releases:

LE BOSSU / CONCERT FOR THE EARTH
Music Composed by Philippe Sarde
Performed by The London Symphony Orchestra

Long-awaited and completely remastered reissue of one the most esteemed works of legendary French composer Philippe Sarde (Les choses de la Vie, Tess, The Bear, Harem).

Le Bossu (aka On Guard!) (1997) was one the last films directed by famous French director Philippe de Broca (L’Africain, L’homme de Rio, L’incorrigible). It is a classy period film, set in the early 1700s and based on the popular character Lagardère/Le Bossu (played in the film by Daniel Auteuil) from the book by Paul Féval. The cast includes actors such as Philippe Noiret, Fabrice Luchini, Vincent Perez, Marie Gillain and Renato Scarpa.

Although de Broca was famous for his collaborations with Georges Delerue (and a few films with Claude Bolling), when Le Bossu was shooting Delerue had passed, so a new composer was needed. The choice of Philippe Sarde was an inspired one. Sarde composed an incredibly powerful and elegant score – including a remarkable love theme – dominated by an unforgettable main theme. The score is superbly performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, including some period-instruments soloists.

The music included on this new Quartet CD is the same that appeared on the album released only in France in 1997 by Virgin. That album quickly went out of print and today is very hard to find. No more music was recorded. In fact, this CD contains more music than was heard in the movie. We have also included a very special bonus track: an unknown and incredible concert work by Sarde that has remained completely unreleased until now: the Concierto por la Tierra (Concerto for the Earth), which was written for a 3-D documentary released to open the Universal Exhibition of Seville (Spain) in 1992. The concerto, a symphonic piece in five movements, is also performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.

The package contains a 12-page full color booklet, with liner notes by Stéphane Lerouge, including a previously unpublished interview with Philippe de Broca and Philippe Sarde about their work together on Le Bossu.

L'ISOLA DI ARTURO
Music Composed by Carlo Rustichelli
Conducted by Bruno Nicolai
Limited Edition of 500 units

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, releases expanded CD premiere of the beatifull, moving score by Carlo Rustichelli, and its personal favourite.

Based on the popular novel by Elsa Morate, and directed by Damiano Damiani, L’isola di Arturo (aka Arturo’s Island, 1962) tells the tale of Arturo, a teenager who lives alone on an island whose only other inhabitants are prisoners. When Arturo’s German father returns to the island, Arturo sees the visit as a chance to mend their relationship, but the introduction of a young bride confuses things. Nunziata is in her late-teens and Arturo immediately fells for the girl who is supposed to be her stepmother since she’s married to Wilhelm. Three’s a crowd in this tiny household and the sexual awakening of Arturo can only end in tragedy...

The music composed by Carlo Rustichelli is a rare gem in the early career of Damiano Damiani and “Arturo’s Theme” is still one of the most addictive character themes of 1960s Italian cinema. Primarily played on the guitar, the music follows Arturo’s development as a character, his battles with his father and his deeper feelings for Nunziata. A secondary theme for this relationship is also introduced, although appears less frequently and some of its variations weren’t used in the film.

Although the score of L’isola di Arturo_was very popular in its day, and the “Arturo’s Theme” was recorded by various orchestras countless times, only six tracks from the original soundtrack has been available in Japan where it was previously released on LP by Seven Seas (paired with selections from Giovanni Fusco’s L’Avventura) so we are especially happy to release the complete presentation of this unforgettable score, offers all the music recorded for the film, including a cue written especially for the trailer.

Mastered by Claudio Fuiano, the richly-illustrated package includes liner notes by Gergely Hubai, who discuss the film, the composer and the score alongside many beautiful stills from the strikingly photographed film.

Both releases will be availables for shipping next Monday 30th. For more information and to listen audio samples, please visit www.quartetrecords.com

L'isola di Arturo is very welcome. It must be one of Bruno Nicolai's first conducting work?

L'ISOLA DI ARTURO is a really lovely Rustichelli score with his typical nostalgic flair and melodic warmth. Bravo to Quartet for releasing this gem from the CAM catalogue!
