Not only did WB not have anything as far as elements, it did not even seem to be one of their titles anymore. It seemed as if they merely distributed it theatrically way back when.

Yet apparently if it's coming out on Warner Archive they do own the film after all...so as regards the music coming out on album,
Help us, Fitzpatrick-Wan Kenobi... You're our only hope!

Apparently, BLACK PATCH was never registered for copyright when it was originally released in 1957. It appears that this was not discovered until 1985, when it came time to renew what should have been the copyright after its initial 28-year run. So, on 7 October 1985, BLACK PATCH received its first registration, by Montgomery Productions, Inc., with the deposit of a 16mm print of the film with the Library of Congress. Four days later, on 11 October 1985, the copyright was renewed, this time with Warner Bros. as the copyright claimant.

Just got through watching it on Vudu, which streams it in 4.3:1 in 480p only, but zooming it to 16X9 didn't cut off anything important. The print is decent, as is the movie itself, which is offbeat for its time, but really not much better than most of the westerns being made then for television. Dan Blocker and John Mitchum have bits and it was nice to see Strother Martin playing someone close to normal. But, of course, it's mostly interesting now as Goldsmith's first feature, and the screen credit reads: "Music composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith" which surprised me. I can't say though that I found the score to be anything exceptional. It's more than competent and well spotted, but hardly anything that would hint at would would come later. I would assume the original session recordings were the property of Montgomery Productions, Inc. If that company still exists in some form, they may have records of what became of the film's elements, though most probably they were saved for a few years, then discarded because of storage costs. Now that the movie is available from the Warner Archive, I expect it'll show up eventually on the Warner streaming service, which I subscribe to but which isn't showing BLACK PATCH yet.

Well, zooba, you're in luck because some time back James Fitzpatrick posted the following on my thread about the Tadlow/Prometheus Goldsmith series (scroll down on the link to see original):

"chriss: Since Face/Black are traditional orchestral scores these two perhaps could be done easily. I hope they are part of those extended suites. Complete presentations would be nice though but we not always need every note. If Tadlow is willing to do these scores at all would be a great gift. And "extended" sounds good, too!
JamesFitz: I know that Luc doesn't want to do that....but I would be interested especially as the Academy has sketches.... "
So we know James is interested in doing them for his own Tadlow label even if Luc at Prometheus isn't interested in those particular titles. (Maybe he'll go for Shamus/Pursuit instead?) I just hope James does the complete scores to preserve them for posterity since there is no other remaining source.
I'll agree they aren't as amazing as many of his later western scores, but they're still very good and the parts you've posted show just HOW wonderful parts are!

A lot of the music in BLACK PATCH for me is basically what Goldsmith was writing for the TV Westerns he would score in the the late 50's - 60's. Always though a tad more inventive then what other composers were doing for those westerns and his music always stood out from the others. Be it orchestrations, use of certain instruments. There was just a much classier and polished sound to his work. I will say that his BLACK PATCH Love Theme is really great. It's full of passion and I think the best part of his score, although he does offer some cool action music in the film, when Hank escapes from jail and is being pursued.
I would love for Tadlow and that wonderful Team lead by James Fitz and Nic Raine to re-record both BLACK PATCH and FACE OF A FUGITIVE. That would be awesome!
Hope it's on their minds as well.

I thought the cue for the jail break rather weak, nothing like what Goldsmith could compose just a few years later, but he may not have had much time, or didn't think the project worth greater effort, who knows? I'm not of the opinion the score is bad -- it's not -- but FACE OF A FUGITIVE seemed better, but then I need to listen to music several times to really grow an appreciation, so I've only heard this score once and mixed with the rest of the soundtrack. A future re-recording would be great.
