Episode 5 is up.

Fascinating stuff...but I'm the only one watching. wink

One event not covered thus far is the 1984 assassination attempt on Gerry Adams.

Episode six is up.

My "least favorite" of the series so far, but no less depressing and gripping. Actually, it's especially depressing because of how "up close" the violence was in terms of the interviewees discussing it. The Beeb website even has several hotlines people who have been newly traumatized by this series can call. The Troubles are seriously f_cking disturbing.

Unfortunately, this episode is a bit sloppy, as it leaves out what happened to some of the key personnel. Maybe it was just the version I saw on The 'Tube. Still, before I watched this series, I only had the barest bones knowledge of The Troubles. Now, I feel like I have a better working, but by no means comprehensive, knowledge of the time. I have been supplementing my viewing of this series with other documentaries, articles, and interviews.

*Whew*

On a MUCH less serious note, seeing the vintage footage in this episode reminds me that the early '90s looked just like the rotten mid-to-late 1980s: cheesy mustaches, women AND men with perm hairdos, mullets, Princess Di hairdos, ugly "bulky Cosby sweaters ("jumpers"); those mullets looked especially hideous because since men didn't wear sideburns, the mullet was even more emphasized.

Refer to the linked YouTube videos above. If you care about such things, the first four episodes are in HD, but five and six* are not.

Episodes three and four are especially strong, and the 90-minute first episode sets up the era quite nicely.

*Now all 6 aired episodes are on The 'Tube in HD.

There's also my loved-only-by-me thread on the Spotlight on the Troubles main title.

While awaiting episode 7--and series conclusion--of the Spotlight on the Troubles, A Secret History, I watched the extremely interesting Peter Taylor: My Journey Through the Troubles. It's a superb run through of the Troubles even though Peter Taylor--who seems to have been an excellent reporter--makes a number of remarks that harm his reporter's objectivity, but that's true of all media people. It's just a shame Taylor gushes over certain events and personalities like a fan instead of a fact-collecting journalist.

Still worth watching, and it comes with my highest recommendation.

Does the new John Lennon doc ABOVE UZ ONLY SKY, count?

It's a UK production, so sure.

In reading the description of it, it seems like Yoko Ono may have been pulling the strings.

Just watched episode 7; it's a satisfying ending to the series but by no means a satisfying ending to the infinite number of issues it chronicles.

Even if you people refuse to comment on the series I encourage everyone reading this to watch Spotlight on the Troubles, A Secret History. smile

Well done, Beeb.
