So I'm on a bit of a Hisaishi kick now, and I've seen this score recommended. Problem is, there seem to be at least three volumes of this score. Anyone familiar with the various editions of this music and want to recommend which is the best to start? The most glowing review I found online was for Volume 2 (http://blog.animeinstrumentality.net/2012/04/nhk-special-drama-saka-no-ue-no-kumo-original-soundtrack-2-review/), I think.

Well all 3 are different and they are all good. Volume 1 is a bit annoying because I don't really like Sarah Brightman's voice. I think Volume 2 is the one with the more enjoyable version of the main titles song by another singer. I haven't listened to all 3 in comparison enough to be able to give you a suggestion about the differences though.

The theme Hisaishi wrote for this is fantastic, one of my favorites. Right up there with Tenshi Meisatsu, which I also highly recommend.

It's not three volumes of score, it's three different scores; each volume for a new season of the show. So like any other series, you start with one.

Also, I think the Sarah Brightman vocal tracks are great!

Thanks, Sirusjr. Will check out #2 to start.

Since Hisaishi builds his material from season to season (and album to album), make sure to eventually get all three. But indeed, #2 is the most entertaining and varied. The second track, "Gaki daisho! Masayuki" is one of the most catchiest things I've heard in a long time. And it comes with plenty of cowbell! big grin

There is a also a single-disc compilation album that features selections of music from all three albums. That could prove to be a better introductory alternate.

Either way don't miss these tracks:

Volume 1:
#2 (wind of ages), #3 (Journey) and #9 (Human Love).

Volume 2:
#1 (Country Boys), #2 (Masayuki), #3 (Time of Miracles), #12 (Hirose), #14 (Our Young Elite), #18 (Ariadna) and #19.

Volume 3:
#3 (earth and life), #8 (sky is clear), #11 (naval battle) and #19 (red flower)
