In the 1950s, Decca released an LP called VICTOR YOUNG'S MUSICAL SKETCHBOOK (DL 8140). Side one has two orchestral suites, "Arizona Sketches,: and "Manhattan Concerto," while side two contains five other short pieces, "In a November Garden," "Beautiful Love," "Moonlight Serenade," "My Mother," and "Travelin' Light." In the liner notes, Young mentions the film score sources for some of these pieces, but not others. I was wondering if anyone out there knows further details on any of these.

So, starting with side one:
"Arizona Sketches." Young says he was commisioned by Paramaount to write a tone poem about Arizona. He then says "This is one time the music has been composed before cinematography was added to it." Does this imply that the music was actually used in a film, possibly a short?

"Manhattan Concerto." Young states that this mini-concerto contains several themes from background scores, but doesn't state which ones.

"In a November Garden." Young says this was theme from an Alad Ladd/Loretta Young film. (Could this be AND NOW TOMORROW? Were there any other films Ladd and L. Young made together?)

"Beautiful Love." Young says nothing about this piece. I am presuming this was a popular tune Young wrote as a song, but not for a movie. (It does however turn up in the 1932 version of THE MUMMY, during a party sequence.)

"Moonlight Serenade." (It is called this on the jacket, but "Summer Love" on the LP label) This piece was later included on the CINEMA RHAPSODIES CD on the Hip-O label, where it was noted as being from THE STAR (1952).

"My Mother" is from THE QUIET MAN

"Travelin' Light." Young says this was a piece originally written for the London String Quartet, so there doesn't seem to be a movie connection on this one.

As usual Jim you've wet my appetite to hear this one. I vaguely recall the Arizona Sketches from years ago but don't remember it. Is this available on CD?

By the way thanks again for taking the time to make my collection complete in regards to "Shape of Things to Come."

Tom

I can't answer your questions Jim but I've had this LP for 40 years and always enjoyed it.

On another LP Young wrote a theme called "Rita." Just learned last year his wife's name was Rita, so I guess he wrote it for her?

I'm a big Victor Young fan, since 1956! Bruce/Kritzerland says he has a lot of Victor Young planned for us. Can't wait! smile

In 1943 Ladd and Young appeared in a Paramount movie titled CHINA. This was the first of two movies they were in.

Hello Jim.

"My Mother" is also the main title from "Rio Grande", made earlier. Perhaps Young (or Ford) wanted to use the theme again in Quiet Man, but I'm not sure it was in the movie.
Anyway, in True Grit: Music from the films of John Wayne, it's called Sean and Kate (Our Mother).

I still have that album. In fact, just recently gave it a spin. Doesn't Arizona Sketches partly at least feature some music from SHANE (Call Of The Faraway Hills)? That was what stuck in my mind anyway.

Where in The Quiet Man is "My Mother" used? I can't remember it in the film.

A very muscular version is used as the main title in Rio Grande, then a gentle version as the film opens. Just beautiful.

Did Victor Young compose this theme originally for Rio Grande?

Didn't a rock/pop singer "borrow" this theme for his song "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" in the 70s? Or?

Now on ebay:

Regarding "My Mother," I don't know where it appears in THE QUIET MAN, unless it's when Wayne first comes back to Ireland and sees the cottage... I'd have to check the DVD. It's also on THE QUIET MAN soundtrack album on Decca, and anyway, I think it's an Irish folk tune that Young adapted (don't quote me on that!)

Bill Finn: No, I'm afraid the theme from SHANE is not in ARIZONA SKETCHES.

Despite the low number of replies to this post, I must happily say I was amazed to get THIS many replies. Thanks!

And, PFK, thanks for the links. I've tracked down a couple of other recordings of "Beautiful Love" from that time, but not these. THANKS!

I'll add a reply -- I was very happy when I found the album and have listened to it many times through the years.

Jim, you might find this interesting.

I got out of the Navy in 1971 and spent a lot of time tracking down film music LPs, as I had done in the 60s. This man sent me a reel recording (!) where he verbally told me the LPs he had, most were not film scores. He did mention a mint copy of Musical Sketchbook. I wrote him a letter and asked him how much he wanted for it. Days later the LP arrived in my mail - he said it was a gift! Wow! smile

My interest in Victor Young started in 1956 when my older brother Joe brought home the LP to Around the World in 80 Days. We shared a bedroom and Joe played it every night for weeks as we fell asleep. I can hear it to this day! smile
