On December 21, 2013 the Varese Sarabande 35th Anniversary Holiday Gala will conclude the year-long celebration for the #1 record label in film music. GSPO's holiday spectacular featuring the Golden State Pops Chorale has become a cultural institution in Southern California for its combination of traditional holiday favorites with great holiday film music. This year they will add a little twist to the joyful occasion. Robert Townson of Varese Sarabande Records will bring to the show Bernard Herrmann's rendition of A CHRISTMAS CAROL performed in a radio broadcast style.

An obscure Bernard Herrmann TV program that became a fast selling Kritzerland album comes to life via Varese Sarabande. I wont get into the ironies of that.

It will be a magical evening for all.

I guess this means that any limited edition scores from Varese are out of the question now until this concert is over. #1 label? I think they lost that awhile ago when their CDs started showing up in Family Dollar stores.

I simply have to say again, I hope they record this and release a CD or DVD (or Blu-ray).

That's great that you're making this concert, Mark. See you there, and Henry, too.

Eugene, the Christmas Carol performamance is what prompted me to want to fly back so soon, however I used it as an excuse to spend a week out there on an actual vacation. Couldn't have done it though without the super generosity of Henry and Nancy!

William Ross and Sara Andon join the Holiday Gala. From facebook:

A Charlie Brown Christmas presented the television debut of Charles M. Schultz's beloved Peanuts characters back in 1965. It received both an Emmy and Peabody Award and has been rebroadcast every year since, becoming an integral part of the holidays. As classic as the show is itself, Vince Guaraldi's music is as classic. His jazz settings of traditional Christmas carols are absolutely magical, and his original compositions "Christmas Time Is Here" and "Skating" have now become standards. I wanted to treat this great music in a new way and give it a fresh orchestral setting to take its place in Holiday symphonic concerts for years to come. Flutist Sara Andon has been part of every Varèse Sarabande 35th Anniversary concert this year. She has wowed audiences around the world and we couldn't even think of our holiday gala without her. Arranging an all new suite from A Charlie Brown Christmas for flute and orchestra is the legendary composer/orchestrator/conductor William Ross! William Ross is a master of all genres, having written for Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Mary J. Blige, Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Rod Stewart, Jackie Evancho, Chris Botti, Neil Diamond and so many more. His film scores include My Dog Skip and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. To have William Ross teaming with the remarkable Sara Andon for the Varèse Sarabande Holiday Gala will be a special gift for everyone with us that night. Ross and Andon will present the premiere of this new suite from A Charlie Brown Christmas with the Golden State Pops Orchestra at the Warner Grand Theater on December 21, 2013. The spirit of Christmas is in this music. Join us!

I've been reluctant to talk about sales since I predicted the Halloween Show selling out and it didn't. But it was a pretty crowded joint! So I will just say that:
a) It is one month away and the whole center section seats are practically gone.
b) The Christmas Show is traditionally a bestseller, selling always more than the Halloween one.
c) If you want "good" seats in the orchestra buy now. The Primo seats in the balcony hang on quite a bit longer.

Varese Sarabande 35th Anniversary Holiday Gala

On December 21, 2013 the Golden State Pops Orchestra and Chorale, with Maestro Steven Allen Fox, Artistic Director, will stage the “Varese Sarabande 35th Anniversary Holiday Gala," a festive evening celebrating holiday film favorites, at the historic Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro beginning at 8:00pm. To date, composer John Debney and composer and orchestrator, William Ross have been announced for December, and Robert Townson, producer of over 1200 of Varese Sarabande’s soundtrack releases since 1986, will act as the evening's host and narrator.

Over a year ago, Townson mentioned to Fox, and Golden State Pops Orchestra Music Director, Victor Pesavento, the idea of presenting a world premiere concert adaptation of “A Christmas Carol”, which aired on CBS in 1954 and features a score by Bernard Herrmann ("Psycho," "Cape Fear," "Citizen Kane") with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson. Says Townson, “Fans of Christmas music and film music won't want to miss this show. Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol' is a timeless holiday classic, and our 2013 collaboration with the Golden State Pops Orchestra presents a fantastic and rare opportunity to perform little-known Christmas music by one of film history's most important composers." The Stage Director for “A Christmas Carol” is Marya Basaraba.

Performers will include Eric Castro as Scrooge (CBS Movie of the Week, Columbia Pictures, American Shakespeare Company, graduate of Yale), Patrick Blackwell as the Ghost of Christmas Present (LA Opera, Utah Opera, graduate of Julliard), Tara Alexander as Belle (GSPO, California Philharmonic, Pacific Opera Projects, Voice of McDonald’s Finalist), Jackson Hatwan as Tiny Tim (currently playing title role in 'Oliver' at the LA County HS of the Arts, National Childrens Chorus), Leighton Saxby singing the Boy Soprano role (LA County HS of the Arts, Colburn School, Amahl in 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' with Suzanna Guzman at the Pasadena Playhouse) and Ashley Nyman as Martha Cratchit (Catherine in 'Pippin' at Azusa Pacific University).

The Golden State Pops Chorale, led by Maestra Marya Basaraba, will also be featured in music from "Elf" by John Debney with Mr. Debney conducting, and songs from "Home Alone" by John Williams. Also on the program will be music from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” prepared for the concert by William Ross and featuring flutist Sara Andon and the song “Still Dream," featuring singer Tara Alexander, which was composed by Alexandre Desplat for the film "Rise of the Guardians" and made famous by Renee Fleming.

I 've seen a camera on practically every show but that has been from the GSPO themselves just doing a for-the-record taping. The only time I saw real camera coverage was on that Big Varese Anniversary concert and I'd think Varese will indeed release a DVD of that.

But my guess for this one is you might see excerpts like this one from the Sherman Brothers night on Youtube and that is about it.
