I felt the score very effective for the most post, a bit too much sound design at times. Very effective, hell yes. Oscar material, nope ( although it was much, much more effective than the award winning The Social Network - another electronic / sound design score ).

Easy to see why some would detest the score, but, for the film, a good choice.

I agree with the Quoted poster, as a score I think it's pretty meh. As an exercise in sound design, it's very effective. Till I recently listened to it on Spotify I though the scoring in Gravity was actually quite limited. I thought it was mostly the work of the sound editors, and not a composer.

I finally got around to buying the CD this week and I've had the last two tracks playing constantly since. The rest of the score is entertaining, but the last ten minutes kick fucking ass.

The whole film is a fantastic achievement. It makes me feel woefully inadequate as a filmmaker since there is no way in Hell I could ever even begin to approach something like that.

Yeah, it was nice to see that Williams seemed pleased with Price's win and congratulated him warmly.

I loved the film. I thought the score was mainly sound design.

Still, I bought the score. Listened to it... and lost interest after a few tracks.

Recently, I re-arranged my soundtrack library and considered selling this score.

But I listened to it once more, just to be sure that I did not care for it.

And weirdly, now I really began to appreciate it. Sure, it has a lot of atmospherics built in, and the main theme is very simple. But boy, is it effective!

I´m keeping this one.

I suspect they reviewed the cd not having seen the film.

Either way they will never live it down

For a more reasoned assessment, check out Jon Broxton's excellent review

I didn't think Bullock was convincing during the second half of the picture. Looked like she was doing her best to pretend she was Sigourney Weaver.

Basil, Basil , basil.......

I'm of a similar opinion. I really do like the general idea and atmosphere of the score and certain parts really "pop" for me, but as an overall album experience, Gravity loses me. Between life and customizing other scores for optimal personalized listening, I haven't taken the time to work out a custom playlist and so virtually never listen to it anymore. Any recommendations on a poppin' playlist? smile

To shorten it one would probably have to lean heavily towards the second half of the score.

This was the worst score I heard in a film last year......... And that awful, Zimmer-y "one woman wail" ending cue, ugh.

I know what you mean. I can't stand Morricone's scores for GBU & ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST because of "woman wail". And, don;t get me started on Ralph Vaughan Williams' SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC!!!

Your wish is my command!

GRAVITY

The MC Marshall re-mix

Sequence:
5
12
14
15
16
6

TT: 35:33

Track six ("Airlock") wasn't used but it makes a nice coda to the 'album'.

If you still can't enjoy this score, there is always max Steiner.....

Bravo, Bruce! Those six tracks play great together and offer a very good overview of Gravity's highlights. This is how I will be listening to this score from now on.

Better luck next time, Max Steiner!
