If is often too properly spoken, formal, and feels put upon.But then I have never understood the American interest or anyone's interest really, in the royal family in the slightest. Okay, then I blame the actor himself. In all fairness, "Downton Abbey" was supposed to be a one-season mini-series. None of the actors expected an extended run, season by season. It was inevitable, IMO, that someone would want to move on to other things, and that's what happened here. Happily, the show's overwhelming popularity (and critical acclaim) is the best thing that has happened for many of the actors involved and they're returning. It's so refreshing to see an exquisitely produced, written and acted drama that works at an adult level rather than at the mostly adolescent level of today's theatrical movies. This show represents just one of many recent series (mostly on cable in the US) that makes today's TV fare far more interesting to me than most anything playing at the cinemas. I was much more crushed by the demsie of Sybil, well, because I had something of a thing for her. A wee bit of heartbreak for me. I really like John Lunn's score for the series as well, especially the urgent and emotionally driven main title music.    Posted:   Sep 19, 2013 - 2:38 PM     By:   Michael24   (Member) I've caught bits and pieces of various episodes (I believe it airs on PBS here in the US), but have yet to really sit down and check it out. I tend enjoy British period pieces, though. And it's embarrassing, but I just now realized I had the title slightly wrong. I thought it was Downtown Abbey. What are the chances of Lady Mary Crawley, after a long period of grief, getting together with Tom Branson? Both now have lost their spouses and both have babies. Eh, I don't know. It's the English trick of style over content; Peyton place in fancy dress. It started with Morse and England has successfully been riding that one trick poney ever since. It's the hypocrytical and perverse admiration the English writers (and probably most or the English) have whilst pretending to be against the class system. All bolshy and working class glorifier on the outside but deep down they gloat about the system "yeah that's us, and everyone envies us for it". Bill Maher did a great item on that in his "new rules". Just another fad to die and wither away.
