More good movies than I remembered as I was trawling through films of this year. Jeunet before he started erring more on the side of twee than delightfully weird, James Cameron's last great action movie, the Coens' ode to writer's block, a great Australian pic with early roles from Hugo Weaving and Russell Crowe, plus a whole lot of good childhood movies too.

Delicatessen (Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet)

Flirting (John Duigan)

Barton Fink (The Coen Brothers)

The Commitments (Alan Parker)

The Fisher King (Terry Gilliam)

Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang Yimou)

The Silence of the Lambs (Jonathan Demme)

City of Hope (John Sayles)

Proof (Jocelyn Moorhouse)

Black Robe (Bruce Beresford)

Other notable films: Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Hear My Song, Dogfight, Thelma and Louise, Boyz N the Hood, L.A. Story, Mediterraneo, The Indian Runner, My Own Private Idaho, JFK, The Lovers on the Bridge, The Beautiful Troublemaker, Europa, Impromptu, Let Him Have It, Mississippi Masala, All the Mornings of the World, Sólo Con Tu Pareja, The Double Life of Veronique, Homicide, Beauty and the Beast, Night on Earth, City Slickers, Bugsy, City Slickers, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Naked Lunch, Cape Fear, The Rocketeer, White Fang, The Addams Family, What About Bob?, Backdraft

What are your favorites of the year? What have I missed? What should I check out?

In no particular order.....

1) Terminator 2
2) Star Trek VI
3) JFK
4) The Silence of the Lambs
5) What About Bob
6) Beauty And The Beast

This is the last time I can participate in these year-by-year lists, as 1991 was the last year I felt motivated to go to theaters. My interest in movies dried up after that.

Just out of curiosity, do you still watch older movies or did your interest in movies go away altogether? In other words, was it the new movies that didn't interest you, or was it that your interests moved away from movies in general?

I felt that new movies just didn't pique my interest anymore. Only on occasion did I venture to a theater to see a new film, such as 1993's Jurassic Park. I saw a few films in 1997 and then went 12 years before going to a theater again. I do still love pre-90's film and film music as the 1980's decade was my big filmgoing period. I'm always hoping something new will get me back to the theater, though. I still watch films from my DVD collection quite often.

Looks like I need to see La belle noiseuse! I'm thinking a double-feature with Andrei Rublev should make for a nice light art-themed night at the movies!

I guess I should also revisit Backdraft. I've been meaning to revisit a lot of Ron Howard's early catalog, but I find him such a boring director now that I'm afraid I'll think the same of movies I used to really like.

Looks like I need to see La belle noiseuse!

Make sure it's the 4 hours-long cut because Rivette did a 2 hours-long recut titled LA BELLE NOISEUSE : DIVERTIMENTO.
And the best way to discover that movie is in a theater on a large screen with a nice sound system. Watching the 4 hours-long cut on a TV screen could be a complete different (read "inferior") sensualist experience...

I guess I should also revisit Backdraft.

I only remember some nice yet brief social focusings on galloping pauperization, a quite rare concern at that time in these kind of movies.

Beauty and the Beast is a lovely, almost perfect film.

The Undiscovered Country was really good, but I had some trouble with the elegiac quality.
Seeing them retire was rather bittersweet. Of course we saw a few of them just a short time later in Generations.
