1200-1300 Sound of Cinema 4: Danny Elfman*
Danny Elfman selects some of his favourite musical moments from the big screen.
1600-1800 Jarvis Cocker*
Jarvis presents a Sound Effects special, where he visits Pinewood Studios. He speaks to Foley artist Peter Burgess and Foley mixer Glen Gathard to learn a few tricks of their trade. Jarvis also narrates a self-penned short story with live Foley, performed by Peter. He'll be looking at how the sound effects side of cinema is created, what the necessary techniques are, key pieces of equipment, as well as the whole phenomenon and history of sound effects.
2000-2200 Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone - The Wicker Man Soundtrack Special*
Stuart Maconie looks at The Wicker Man’s iconic soundtrack with help from the film’s Associate Music Producer, Gary Carpenter. The Wicker Man pioneered a new approach to horror with its crazed paganism, eerie psy-folk soundtrack and terrifying climactic ending. Surrounding the interview, Stuart delves into the rich world of British sci-fi and horror soundtracks from across the decades.

Matthew Sweet profiles music for films reflecting journalism, from The Fifth Estate to Frost/Nixon. The Fifth Estate is Bill Condon's new drama based on the WikiLeaks story, with music by Burwell. Matthew looks back at some of the great film scores created for movies inspired by the world of journalists and journalism, including Bernard Hermann's celebrated music for Citizen Kane; Nono Rota's music for La Dolce Vita; and Hans Zimmer's music for Frost/Nixon.

1200-1300 Sound Of Cinema: The First Time With David Lynch*
A new series of The First Time returns to 6 Music as part of the BBC's Sound Of Cinema season with probably the most distinctive, original and disturbing filmmaker in the history of modern cinema - David Lynch. World famous as a filmmaker, writer and television director, Lynch is also a musician, having helped create the music for many of his movies as well as solo albums like this year's The Big Dream – a record as hypnotic and disturbingly beautiful as his films. In a very rare interview, he speaks to Matt Everitt about his formative early musical influences (Chopin and the sound of B36 bombers flying over his childhood home apparently), his passion for Elvis and early rock n roll, directing David Bowie, his love of jazz, how he creates his own unique music and how the imagery and plot of his classic film Blue Velvet was directly inspired by Bobby Vinton's 1963 classic single... Which would never sound the same again.

Matthew Sweet captures the action-packed world of the thriller with a programme of film music inspired by hijacking, the subject of this week's featured new film release, Captain Phillips.Captain Phillips is a biopic directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks, recalling the story of Captain Richard Phillips who was taken hostage by Somali Pirates during the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009. Matthew features some of Henry Jackman's music for the film and looks back on scores from other great thrillers inspired by hijacking.
