I recently finished watching this bizarre French drama series, in which dead people start returning to a small French mountain town, after many years away...having died of course!
Nothing is really explained, but the show is strangely compelling and kept me coming back for more.
The main theme and score was by UK band Mogwai and it was also quite beguiling.
It mainly consisted of 4 or 5 themes or motifs that were trotted out repeatedly, without much development. An organ cue for some sombre or revelatory moments, a strange percussive scratching sound for the creepiness and some nice piano and cello themes for various character developments.
It will be back in 2014 with a 2nd series. I just wondered if anyone else had seen or heard it?

THE RETURNED -- titled REBOUND in some databases -- pays tribute to a 2004 movie in which the lives of the residents of a small French town are changed when thousands of the recently dead inexplicably come back to life and try to integrate themselves into society that has changed for them. It has the same french title -- LES REVENANTS -- and has two international titles : THE RETURNED -- like the drama series -- or THEY CAME BACK. It's a good movie and the leading actor Frédéric Pierrot plays in both movie and drama series.

But the drama series focus only on the mystery stuff meanwhile the movie had interesting "sociological" concerns. Yet i enjoyed the drama series even if i already knew a second season was planed and though we would not have any explanation at the end of season one. The cast is brilliant and features among the most promising -- and confirmed -- french comedians. And yes, the score works fine on that show and has a mesmerizing impact.

The writer and director Fabrice Gobert directed his first movie -- SIMON WERNER A DISPARU or LIGHTS OUT in english -- in 2010, a very well-done mystery drama about the strange disappearance of a college boy told from five or six different points of view and he already proved he could handle in a very brilliant way that mystery touch one enjoys in THE RETURNED. Unfortunately i found the score by Sonic Youth played against the tonality of the movie. By the way that was the first appearance of young Ana Girardot who is obviously one of our future great actress and -- as you already know -- she "generously" wink features also in THE RETURNED. How did you hear of that show by the way?

Yes, Mogwai is a rather well known band, and I would think that most people who bought the album (like me) are fans of the band and don't know much about the series.

>>>>>>>>How did you hear of that show by the way?>>>>>>>>>>

I saw the trailers on Channel 4 in the UK and it looked quite interesting, so I set my Virgin Box to record the series.
I didn't know, at that point, it was a French series and subtitled, but when I settled down to watch it, I found it completely mesmerising and I pretty much watched the 12 episodes in the space of a week or so!
I didn't know about the film from earlier years. Will watching the film ruin anything within the series?
I will say that the Main Title theme is one of the catchiest and most memorable new TV themes I have heard for quite some time.
I will probably grab a copy of the soundtrack from Amazon.

I love young French actresses and their lack of inhibitions!! wink

Here is a link for the soundtrack, with some customer reviews, for anyone who might be curious.

I have no interest in the music, which at times I found thoroughly distracting to be honest, but I really enjoyed this series. Reminded me of 'Twin Peaks' at times, for no obvious reason. Didn't realise there is to be a 2nd series, I'll look forward to that.

Yes, TWIN PEAKS was called back to my mind as well, although without the eccentricity that Lynch likes to wallow in.

They're not related to each other -- plot or mood -- so enjoy the viewing but keep in mind the movie is not a mystery movie. And SIMON WERNER A DISPARU -- LIGHTS OUT -- is great too:

different cinematographer from the drama series, yet same kind of night filming approach: i forgot to mention in my first post, and i'm sure you'll agree, the outstanding photography of the night scenes in REBOUND.
