He off'd himself at 61+. I'm 61+. Sorry, no rifle to eat.

I always pictured you as a "walk-into-the-propeller"-type.

A white-bearded man from Texas wins this year's Hemingway lookalike contest.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/white-bearded-texan-wins-ernest-hemingway-look-alike-contest-article-1.3349302

...of course, Hemingway did not actually look like that during his Key West years, but just as with Elvis Presley impersonators, they go for the big and burly, later years incarnation--easier to mimic.

Where die you place in this contest, Howard? wink

Although I had a beard twice when I was considerably younger, "burly"...oh there they've got me. Jack Lemmon was never burly ya know?

Always thought young Ernesto looked like young Cruise.

I mentioned that Tom Cruise resemblance way upthread there. Apparently, women were koo-koo about him during his young years yet he was either oblivious or merely too damned shy.

Good looks, talent, intelligence...Hem had it all.

Time to Plug a Book and Present its Hypothesis as Fact Dept.

"Hemingway's Suicide Incorrectly Attributed to Alcoholism and Bipolar Disorder"

http://whqr.org/post/coastline-hemingways-suicide-incorrectly-attributed-alcoholism-and-bipolar-disorder#stream/0

Incorrectly? It's plausible, until one remembers that Hemingway's father, grandfather, brother, sister, AND granddaughter all committed suicide and I doubt they suffered from traumatic head injuries.

Plus, if 111 NFL players were found to have had that condition upon posthumous examination, it was because they were NFL players, were exposed to concussion-causing conditions, and suspected they had the condition, hence the donating of their bodies to science for said examination.

I'm sticking with the alcoholism and bipolar disorder theory until they can conclusively prove otherwise.

My summer vacation has begun in...Ernest! So, let us plan the revelry with...

Cocktails of the Lost Generation:

https://cocktailmuseum.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/cocktails-of-the-lost-generation-paris-in-the-1920s/

I like that they get into the...spirit(s)...of the era with the vintage ad displays, and the Powerpoint presentation is charmingly humble. smile

A succinct, spot-on review of "Paradise Lost", the new Fitzgerald biography; and it's a fine review not just because the reviewer's opinion of both Fitzgerald and "This Side of Paradise" mirrors my own. wink

An excerpt from an audio interview with Hadley, who reminisces about times spent with Hemingway and a particularly humorous anecdote about a beer-drinking contest.

These nterviews are available at the JFK Library. Great stuff...Paris...and Spain...in the 1920s.

Howard L, you may want to position your Zimmer Frame towards the TV set and watch "Hemingway and Gellhorn" with the Philip Kaufman audio commentary. Good stuff on the technical and historical aspects of making the film.

Muchas gracias for yet another heads-up. You've done right by me with all of 'em so far, JP. Oh and "What is 'For Whom The Bell Tolls?'" was a recent correct final Jeopardy response.

I was given the Hemingway and Gellhorn dvd last Christmas but only now got around to listening to the commentary.

Hemingway nut that I am, I've watched the film itself about five times. big grin

Hey Lukas or David Sones, please "sticky" this thread so that it never leaves the top of the forum. wink

While we're "all" waiting on that, there's a new edition of Hemingway's short stories with several added bonuses of interest to the Hemingway afficionado:
