I decided to download this score and film from iTunes to watch whilst I am holidaying again in Sorrento, overlooking the Bay of Naples.

I am a long in the tooth Science Fiction afficiando since the early 70's and have seen what are to me very good SF genre films and some pretty poor ones. Fore me the pinnacle of achievement in this genre is 2001 and, for different reasons, Planet of the Apes (the original). I prefer hard SF but am not immune to liking Science Fantasy.

I thoroughly enjoyed both After Earth and Oblivion.I thought the plot was robust and enjoyable and the narrative thrust, cinematography and CGI pretty damned impressive. I will definitely be buying the bluray. Whilst not a fan of Cruise I have to admit he does turn out some impressive films, IMO.

I was also impressed with Daft Punk's score for Tron Legacy and am doubly impressed with the score to Oblivion. I have had it constantly playing on my iPod while reading a hard SF novel and sun bathing beside the pool. One small niggle, I thought the score somewhat overpowered the visuals in places by being a tad loud.

I was a follower of the Rotten Tomatoes site but am beginning to feel it doesn't chime with my assessments of quite a few films lately. But there you go.

The Tron Legacy score is a modern classic, IMO. One of my favorite CDs of the past 5 years. The movie was a lot of fun too.

Oblivion, on the other hand - narratively - was a disaster. The first hour was a ton of fun, and was really promising. The last hour or so of the film just collapsed under its own sci-fi cliched weight. I was so disappointed that I almost left the theater.

The score to Oblivion is actually pretty cool, and is a fun listen.

Was able to rent the movie the other day and I will be buying the DVD. It is one of the better SCIFI movies I have seen in some time.

Ditto here.

I think the prevalent concern many who criticize the film for having cliched moments share is that they might be overlooking the themes of the film that extend from these plot developments, and how they are what differentiates this film from other stories with the same conceit. Science Fiction has a long, storied history of use and re-use, cliche and originality, but the makers of the material should set aside for themselves thematic consistency which is not readily available in what ideas might have inspired them -- for me, Oblivion has this thematic material in spades.

Finally saw it. Liked it. If they were making a ton of futuristic sci-fi I might not have liked this so much. But they're not so I thought this was terrific. (From purely hardware smut it was awesome.) I liked Cruise a lot in it. As he gets older he seems more comfortable with underplaying and he’s getting good at it.

I actually got the score when the movie came out. I thought it was ok, but it reminded me too much of Batman Begins and Tron: Legacy. Having seen the film I now know my favorite bits. (StarWaves and Earth 2077 are terrific.) Turns out I have the “deluxe” edition. I made a playlist of the NOT deluxe and I like it better. Less is sometimes more.

Another fan of the movie here...not so hot on the score as a stand-alone product, but it works well in the movie...an intelligent (to an extent) sci-fi flick, so it's bound to have many detractors.

I even saw one review that suggested that you "ignore the blatant Scientology overtones" or something like that...I know Scientology better than many people, and it's an utterly ridiculous thing to write. I know that might cause some replies, so I suggest maybe just not bothering - something for another time as any discussion of this will close the thread which would be a shame.

I aasume you got the score as a download? I sure would like to obtain it on CD if it ever was released.

I enjoyed every last track of the delux edition.

iTunes. Maybe I'll go back and try getting into the whole thing. I have been coming back to this a lot these days.

An interesting listening pattern seems to be start Oblivion, move to the Oblivion sounding bits of Man of Steel, say "the heck with this" and move to Williams' Superman, realize I don't WANT to listen to bright and orchestral, and either go back to Oblivion or move over to Pacific Rim. I've done this three times this week.

I love the fact that M83 got this scoring gig.

By the way, M83 is now scoring You And The Night, starring none other than Eric Cantona.

Heh heh. That is SO much me as well when it comes to my listening experience. Sometimes I can just go for what I want but usually it involves the process you describe.

I will check out Pacific Rim now that you mention it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film, probably more so since I did not read a single review or check out anything written on Rottentomatoes.com. The effects and set design and art direction were nearly seamless in their construction and I did not really figure out what was going on until right at the reveal. However for me, the finale did had too much of a visual reference to another, much more well known and bigger hit but one that since then has become somewhat reviled.

Overall Oblivion was very well done science fiction film that kept me extremely intrigued and glued to the screen.

Oblivion is a film that gets better and better with each viewing.
So much is missed the first time around (for me anyway).
I've grown to really love M83's score too which fits the images like a glove.
I highly recommend watching the documentaries (including the M83 doco) and the commentary by Tom Cruise and writer / director Joseph Kosinski. You realise just how layered the story and characters really are. I tip my hat to all involved.
I'd say it's the best sci-fi I've seen in years!

To me, the finale aboard the TET referenced Independence Day and The Matrix, but which one is TominAtl considering the "reviled" one?

It was a solid score in context. Nothing more though.

The most boring and cliched movie in years.

It's almost like a fan fiction written by a 15-year-old after having watched The Matrix and 2001 and many other sci-fi movies for the first time.

The Apple-inspired production design is the only good thing of this movie.

The score is just second-rate Zimmer-wanna-be. So boring and unmemorable and it makes me genuinely appreciate what Zimmer does. -- Zimmer maybe does not do high art, but at least he is entertaining. This M83 Inception knock off is just plain bad.

Oh and an intergalactic 2001-Monolith-like alien intelligence can't do its own drone-repairing and has to rely on the unreliable Tom Cruise.

Just like Tron Legacy, Oblivion is a story-based movie which struck me as bland (especially the characters) and visually expressionless. There's virtually no emotional or storytelling power (pretty is not beautiful). It's an expensive 2 hour episode of The Twilight Zone. Kosinski's next project is The Twilight Zone, BTW. The last time I was intrigued by this type of stories was when I was 12.
