“Sapphire and Steel” is most definitely a product of its era, and ought to most specifically appeal to British sci-fi enthusiasts who will best appreciate its primitive special effects and leisurely paced stories.
A little too dismissive, I think. I remember this being a coolly-assembled series that managed to create a quite creepy mood and even creepier stories, being a bit more 'grown-up' than was usual for teatime fare. Yes, memory can make old stuff you've seen from long ago a little more lustrous and rose-tinted in the mind, especially if it's been a long time since you've seen it, but it was something different and highly entertaining back then. The only thing that truly spoiled Sapphire and Steel was the idiotically bombastic opening tune and its stiffly portentious speech, delivered by a man with a slight lisp ("Theeth are the forceth!").
On a different note, the heart sinks a little when I discover that a Robert De Niro film I didn't know was made is now available on Blu-Ray. I suppose he needs to keep Tribeca going, but I do recall when a Robert De Niro film was an event.
