I wonder if this Oscar nominated score will ever receive a proper release? I know the Oscar promo was made widely available, in many subsequent and unofficial releases of the score, but I would love a legitimate release of this fine music. Are there problems licensing from Miramax? Any other reasons why this score can't be made available?

We have been working on this expanded edition for a few months. We hope to include all the songs of Elliot Smith which appear in the movie. His songs are so specific to the mood of Gus Van Sant's movie. But we need to fix many legal issues... as usual!

Excellent news! Good on you Music Box. Looking forward to this one, once you unravel all those pesky legalities!

Awesome news! I'm a big Elliott Smith fan, too - and while I already own the Good Will Hunting songtrack and all of Elliott's CDs, I'm glad to see that these will (hopefully) be a part of this. Most of the songs in the movie are from the albums "Either/Or" or "Roman Candle." The rights to those albums and any recordings from that time period belong to Kill Rock Stars - although in the case of "Roman Candle," KRS has not always been the rightsholder. They have historically been very willing to rerelease old tracks, release archival recordings, etc. Any recordings made after his signing to Dreamworks Records (which began with his album XO and ended with his death, excepting a special deal made for the posthumous release From A Basement on the Hill) belong to Dreamworks, or whatever they have dissolved into. They have not been nearly as forthcoming with Elliott releases despite the copious recordings made during those years - probably because that money is a drop-in-the-bucket compared to big stars and releases. I believe "Miss Misery," the Oscar-nominated track from the film, would fall under this umbrella. Hopefully the rights issues can be worked out between all parties, because "Miss Misery" is really the key one for GWH, IMO

This is it! We have fixed all legal issues. The coming CD album will contain the five songs by Elliott Smith (including "Miss Misery") and the complete original score composed by Danny Elfman. We will also include more cues than the FYC Promotional CD. The album will likely be released in 2014.
