Iam wondering, if this little gem will find its way on cd one day. I have the feeling, that Vaerese wont release it (even if they released the original LP). My hope is, that the rights (MCA) are not longer hold by Varese and that another Label will do it (complete and expanded hopefully). Most of you know, that the movie is a cult classic and the music by Peter Schickele is truly beautyfull, so why no one released it? There has been discussion about here before, but some years has passed and still nothing happens. Wich Label do you think will finally release it? I think Intrada or maybe Kritzerland. Funny, one or two years ago, I had definitly thought, that FSM would bring it out. But sadly, today i know THAT will never happen :-(

Have the songs been re-released independently ... like, ever?

SILENT RUNNING is an old favorite of mine, going back to the days when I had to tape it by holding a microphone up to the TV speaker. This was in the mid-70s. I tried to special-order the Decca LP from a record store but it was no longer available. I eventually got the Varese LP by mail-order from STARLOG magazine, along with DARK STAR, DRESSED TO KILL, and the Charles Gerhardt version of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Good times. If I didn't have a good vinyl conversion, I'd be climbing the walls for a SILENT RUNNING CD.

Jeff you've got me curious- is there one in particular I should try first? I know there are a few Schickele Classical albums available but being ignorant of his work other than SILENT RUNNING I have always been hesitant to try one.

Another year on since the last post in this thread and still no CD soundtrack of Silent Running on the horizon from anybody. Why the heck has there been no release of this on CD over the years? Who currently owns the Rights to the soundtrack? ¶ The Seventies ceased to sell well, according to Lukas Kendall.

Hmm, yep, still waiting. I had hoped that when the Blu-ray came out over here in the UK (complete, as I recall, with an isolated fx/score track), it was the perfect time for someone to release the soundtrack. Its really quite bizarre- the tapes exist, the old Varese vinyl release seems proof enough of that. Maybe Varese own the rights forever and we need them to do an Encore release, but of late Varese seem hardly bothered with releases at all. Its great music, a lovely film. What gives?

The Seventies ceased to sell well, according to Lukas Kendall. Very sad. The arithmetic says that fans of this score should be in their mid-50s and up, and I guess it's true that this demographic shops less for music. But we went through a long period when Golden Age titles I never heard of were coming out left and right, so it seems unfair that Silver Agers aren't getting the same treatment.

I'm happy to know that there are other souls who wants the definitive CD on these great scores... I have been searching it forever, now I know I'm not like Dewey under the dome.

I, too, would love a CD of this - both the real tracks, plus the LP re-recordings. A fine, unusual score. I remember, back in the late 1970s, Peter Schickele was in Chicago, conducting one of his comic P.D.Q. Bach concerts, and appeared at a book-signing event (for his book, "The Definitive Biography of P.D.Q. Bach"). I brought along a copy of the Decca LP of SILENT RUNNING for him to sign. I remember that he looked at it with a contented grin, and after a few seconds, said "You know? Even I don't have a copy of this!" I wish the the best to "Professor" Peter Schickele, and I hope his few film scores someday see the light of day in the CD/download age.

I, too, would love a CD of this - both the real tracks, plus the LP re-recordings. They should be one and the same. The LP says OST.
