I absolutely mean well with this, but... doesn't the non-film score discussion board existence imply that the general discussion board is used to talk about, you know, film scores, not about patronizing and instructive posts about the human condition, like "I've been an aggressive guy lately because some sad reasons" or "put a emoticon in your life"?

An apology should always be made at the same place as the offence is caused.

The very fact that arguments about these kinds of things take place in the first place is not a good sign.

Shit like this ^ needs to be trolled. Were you drunk when you wrote it, man? Talk about rambling from one load of bollocks to another. And that's not to mention the typos!

Jehannum, auto-erogenic,
Has a penchant for venting the splenic,
With Oedipal rages,
He pricks at the sages,
To the autistic, all's schizophrenic.

Nice limerick, whether one agrees or not.

Octoberman, I had completely forgotten there WAS another section of this messageboard!!

Thus backing up my assertion that any retraction should have the same venue and prominence as the original text. And in the absence of a time machine, that's pretty much all one can do.

Once in a while, there are solid and valid reasons for posting a non music topic on this side. Tall Guy, you were justified and have NO reason for wanting a time machine. You did the right thing the first time.

The great thing about the FSM board is that it is a positive place. Lukas is very generous indeed to let us push and shove a little while in line. Still, the internet is a place where words and images are bartered. In the real world things can be very ugly. Infinitely more so than exchanges of words on an electronic forum.

Compared to other forums I've seen FSM is actually quite a negative one.
Some really mean spirited debates going on here at times. Often by a small group of people. But still.

Joan & TG, I was referring to this, Regie's, actual thread being on the "wrong side" (for want of a better word) of the board. I believe that was also the meaning of the poster I quoted. The placement of TG's thread was fine for all the reasons he specified.

Sorry if I worded it confusingly.

Actually this site has toned down the hostility level by a significant amount. You should have been here a few years ago! Guess we all get more mellow as we age......

Octoberman, you didn’t do anything wrong. I think I understood what you saying in previous posts. First I want you to know that you are one of my favorite posters. I always see you as a “passionate gentleman.”
What I hope you won’t mind is me respectfully disagreeing with a few of your earlier comments on this thread. You and I are also in agreement on some points.

As you already know, you and I both agree that Tall Guy’s topic was appropriately placed on this side,
and he explained why. A lot of people don’t go to the other side of the board, so I think sometimes
non-music topics are placed here because it might be important to reach everyone. Sometimes we’ve had a beloved poster who is ill, so someone informs us about that person’s health on this music side.
I’m glad that happens. People can skip it if they choose. Also, Regie isn’t the first person to post about Internet communication problems on this side. This side is for Music Communication, but we all know that at times tempers, rudeness and snarky comments have destroyed grand topics which lead to anger, hurt feelings, and locked thread…..hence, no discussion. Therefore, maybe a communication skills
topic is needed now and then as a reminder. I don’t believe “spots” change, but you never know. Two weeks ago, drivingmissdaisy posted a topic on this side called “Yor” asking for more civilized comments and discussions. A few people wanted it moved to the other side. Others didn’t mind, and I sense
that since he posted that discussion, things have really been better for some posters.

I agree that Tester’s comments probably were not projection. At least I didn’t read them that way; however, I do struggle with what he did mean. Without tone, I’m just not sure. He said:

“absolutely mean well with this, but... doesn't the non-film score discussion board existence imply that the general discussion board is used to talk about, you know, film scores, not about patronizing and instructive posts about the human condition, like "I've been an aggressive guy lately because some sad reasons" or "put an emoticon in your life"?”

I like the way he begins. (“mean well with this.”) I like the idea of an “instructive” post, but calling it “patronizing” would bunch my panties. The “aggressive guy” comment is aimed at Tall Guy, and
I don’t think he deserved that. The “emoticon” refers to this topic. Tester is right about this
being a music side, but I think it is okay now and then to put a non-music topic here if it is
seen as important to most of us. Of course, it is a personal opinion as to what is
important to each of us, and this is only my opinion so people can feel free to disagree.

Oh, yeah, when I join the celestial heavens with Goldsmith and Bernstein, I want my
Buddies to post my demise on this side of the board and in Capital Letters! smile

Yeah, I get exactly what you are saying about the part you quoted. I made a deliberate decision to disregard the general gist of that part of his post (as I didn't see anything particularly defendable about it) and commented instead on the "location" aspect.

And thank you, Joan, for your kind words. They're VERY much appreciated. smile

You are welcome, and it is nice to know that you and I did NOT "have a failure to communicate."

For the avoidance of doubt, Ock, I was replying to Tester. I hadn't quite got my head around what you were saying at that point! smile

Joan - thanks, right-thinking as ever.

There's yet another highlighting of Twitter in the UK news at the moment, that has prompted an apology from Twitter's UK boss:

http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Cambridge/Mary-Beard-sent-bomb-threat-tweet-after-Twitter-boss-denounces-trolling-20130804095627.htm

Mary Beard is an academic who makes quite a few TV documentaries on classical history, and she's had many attacks from sexist and ageist young mal-nerds, and tons of obscene stuff thrown her way, plus hoax bomb-threats. Many people on the UK observed a 24 hour protest and boycotted Twitter in her defence.

Apparently the troll was given a dressing-down by his mother and forced to apologise too.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/23565145

Note that previous victims who highlighted their own problems with Twitter last week, an MP and a feminist, received pretty vile SEXIST stuff of a sexual nature. The feminist's great crime was that she managed to successfully campaign to have a woman's portrait (Jane Austen) on a UK banknote. Two have been ARRESTED.

The idea that people with Twitter accounts (why, oh why?) should accept this bilge as part of the game is unacceptable.

I was talking to a vicar some time ago who felt that a particular parish might benefit from a twitter account, especially for the teenagers, but simply couldn't take the risk that they should be exposed to that sort of thing. The big assumption is that the world should be populated by total bottom-feeders who regard malevolence or just malevolent expression as part of the norm, i.e. 'We can't cut it as great ones, so we'll bring down everyone we envy'. Old Sigmund had a word for that.

I think some people on this board are just too stressed out and need to relax.
Try listening to these for help:

I have a friend who's a Buddhist who makes recordings like this, he teaches meditation.

Except his are serious and go somewhere.

This chap sounds like he's been practising seduction techniques on girls who live in dorms.

Except he's not very seductive.

Or very relaxing.
