I thought it was very very average. The designs were ok but the script was absolutely awful and the characters stereotyped and one dimensional.
Yeah, the script could definitely have been better. There was a lot of technical stupidity, too -- but then, there has to be in a monsters vs mechas film: there's just no unstupid way to believe that punching monsters with giant humaniform robots is the most efficient way to deal with them. That said, as a number of viewers have observed, this movie's smart other than scriptwise:

And I'm sure you can find more if you're interested. But there are reasons I still stick with del Toro despite his often clumsy scripts and pacing: his worlds are full of visual rather than textual wonder and intelligence, and I'll forgive a lot in a movie for that.
I enjoyed the heck out of the movie, and went a second time within a week. Sure the dialogue is corny, but del Toro makes it so you even care for the side characters, and the action is pretty amazing (not to mention the fights evolve - it isn't Man of Steel, where it's basically an invincible god brawl in a city for the last hour).
I also read the first link article a few days ago and found it compelling how visually intelligent the film is. A lot of that stuff I didn't even notice the first time around. Makes me appreciate what this movie does have, even if it isn't perfect.
Totally agree with your assessment, especially your remark about Man of Steel...by the last half hour I stopped caring.

What does that even mean?
If you insert a tampon into the wrong orifice, it will expand to become...
...a huge pain in the ass! Just like PACIFIC RIM.

I saw the 3D trailer and every scene appeared to be in the rain. That's when I lost all interest. That's exactly how they did that American GODZILLA. I was bored by all that rain.

I was disappointed in the film. A friend of mine who is critic for the NY Post gave it four stars. Hardly. First, I'm singularly unimpressed by digital character battles. They should have been more specific about the warriors inside the robots and how they actually manipulated the machines - made the fights more personal. I also have a thing about all these fights being shot with close and constant moving cameras. It's far more impressive when the camera is back and stationary and you get to see the characters in full action (like that one great stationary shot in Jackson's KING KONG when he fought the dinosaur) I loved the stuff with Ron Perlman and the geeky scientists.
I'll agree that I enjoyed the dino fights in the last KING KONG so much more than Pacific Rim.
I'll disagree about the geeky scientists in one aspect: I thought they were an entirely separate movie.

Seems to me that one of the prime reasons to do a Godzilla Redux like this would be to do more photorealistic sequences of giant creatures tearing up urban landscapes, or even complex rural ones. That was one of the things the old Japanese gojira movies did the best. PACIFIC RIM skips this crucial element entirely. Apparently so we can focus on the pallid "characters" Del Toro seems to have thought up in his sleep.
What does it say about your "cutting-edge" CGI gojira update, when THE X FROM OUTER SPACE outdoes it in terms of the intensity of emotion generated by its Giant Monster in Urban Landscape sequences?
These Uber-effects mavens like John Knoll are too arrogant and rich to go back to the past and find out why the old giant monster flicks worked. Here's a hint, John: Not because they looked especially "realistic".
Hence, PACIFIC RIM's designation as a cinematic tampon stuck in the wrong place. A totally blown opportunity for fun.

So Pacific Rim failed at being a good movie about monsters tearing up landscapes, in part because it was neither about nor trying to be about monsters tearing up landscapes?
If Del Toro's intention was to make a kind of "postmodern" gojira flick, which put human interactions ahead of the monster spectacle, he should have bothered to write interesting characters to fill that need.
Instead, I found myself more excited about Rinko Kikuchi's hairstyle that I was about the monster battles. I'll get more into why the monster battles utterly failed later. It's got something to do with workstation perspective vs. model maker and costume maker perspective.

I just saw, for the first time, what I think was an episode of ULTRA MAN. Cheesy spfx, guy in monster suit: but because I got to see them fighting almost head to toe in daylight, I didn't care.
