Eileen Brennan, an actress who was nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting role in the 1980 comedy “Private Benjamin,” has died. She was 80.

Brennan died of bladder cancer Sunday at her home in Burbank, said her publicist, Jessica Moresco.

Brennan’s other film credits in a long career included “The Sting” (1973) and “The Last Picture Show” (1971) as well as Peter Bogdanovich's "Last Picture Show" sequel, “Texasville” (1990).

After appearing with Goldie Hawn in “Private Benjamin,” Brennan starred in the TV series spinoff, winning an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Capt. Doreen Lewis.

Her survivors include two sons, Sam and Patrick; two grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen Howard

Eileen Brennan as Peter Falk's Sam Diamond's long suffering "secretary" in Murder by Death could steal scenes with the best of them. And the best of them were in that movie. She was a terrific actress and her talent will be missed.

She always stole the scenes of whatever she was in. I really enjoyed her.
