Now according to all sources that I put some faith in this is all the music that could be found for VIBES.
Longer also doesn't always means it will be BETTER.
Also, what some of the folks who are BITCHING seem to forget is that this title has been OUT OF PRINT for perhaps 22 YEARS!!!!!!
Let me repeat, IT'S BEEN OUT OF PRINT FOR 22 YEARS !!!!!
So at this point reissuing it at what I assume will be a slightly lower price then the normal club titles isn't a bad thing and will allow folks who didn't pick it up (some who were not even BORN) when it came out to have a crack at it.
Also it's very possible VARESE had to renew the license in order to reissue it, I don't know, but it's a good GUESS.
So bitching about it with NEED TO KNOW INFORMATION in order to offer a informed and intelligent opinion really isn't a nice thing to do.
IMHO of course.
Way to reveal your true colors, Ford. While we appreciate your input about missing elements, calling any criticism of this release as "fanboy BS" or "bitching" is simplifying a more complicated issue. I did note my emotional connection to that score, so I admit that it motivated my jumping the gun, but that does not automatically let Varese off the hook. As I also mentioned before, that label pulled a similar stunt on Chinatown w/ their Encore release, and MV Gerhard called them out on their laziness (folks from Intrada as well, I believe).
Pristine original elements appeared for a film with a similar atmosphere, House Of Cards (which was a flop), so it was only natural for myself or another fan to assume original elements for a slightly higher-profile flop w/ Cyndi Lauper (and backed by Ron Howard) would have survived. Unless we have clarification from an industry figure like you or the label, we can only assume the worst. However, as fans that have not only waited for a physical copy these past 22 years, BUT are also aware of the missing cues, it's only fair that Varese discloses on their press release that the album program was all that survived. Again, this is all in CONTEXT with what happened on the Chinatown release

IMHO, The very fact that this release is parked under the series sub label of VARESE ENCORE explains that its a repressing of the previous album issue with only improved sound mastering and a more detailed booklet/packaging. Had the re-issue been expanded it would have turned up as a Deluxe Edition- case in point THE ABYSS and STAR TREK NEMESIS. This is why these products are being branded as such and its also avery clever way of saying" We cant get more music out at this point and hence our best alternative is to re-issue it as its been OOP for so long and something in hand is worth it than not having it afterall " Hence the VARESE ENCORE series.

Simply, I love this score. One of my favorite Horner "modes" -- House of Cards, Where the River Runs Black, and Vibes...great to go hiking to.

(And you can't ignore that the ethnic Spanish tones carry into future ethnic Horner scores. That end title rhythm shows up in House of Card and The 33)
The music heard when Sylvia and Nick trek back to the hotel is actually a copy of the Bolivian folk song called "El Triste"

I like this score a lot. However, it's ambient, atmospheric, mood wallpaper, it is not ot a dramatic, romantic orchestral film score, like Krull or Raiders. I accept scores at face value for what they are. Listening to it right now, and it's pleasant background chill music.

Another "second attempt" Horner. I never owned the (rare) CD, but I've had the digital files for many years. I sampled it once, several years ago, and didn't care for it much, so it just sat there on my hard drive without being played. At that time, I probably felt it was too textural, not enough melody. These days, however, my taste has changed. I can now say that this is actually a pretty GOOD score, more in line with my current taste, and has the potential to grow even more in my estimation. Wonderful mood, augmented by pan pipes, anvils(?) and synths. Totally absorbing. Nothing too wild or "noisy" that can grate. Congratulations, VIBES, you've now qualified for permanent place in my iTunes collection!
