ONLY GOD FORGIVES

DRIVE

HEAT

DRIVE ?? Have you ever seen SHANE ??

Yes, Drive.

The film where Ryan Goslin plays a driver who has a job as a stunt man, a mechanic, and a wheel man for the mob but as prove by the end of the film...has no interest in money!

He doesn't even give it to the only people in the film he seemed to care about and while I love the track, it's really annoying when the film uses A REAL HERO to close the film after it already was used poorly to show how our lead is a "real human being."

I don't need a film to spell out everything but there isn't a damn thing about the Driver that makes sense or add up like why does he lead a life of crime in the criminal element if he seems to not care about money nor is he moral in any sense because while he will protect an innocent woman and child he has no problem slapping around another woman for answers.

HEAT I have always hated because of the "epic" dinner scene where the two leads basically spell out their life missions and then the film shows us an extra hour the story doesn't need where Pachino fights to save his marriage even though its his third one and he lives only to take down crews and DeNiro is suppose to be a guy that has no connections but he falls in love and risks everything for a woman he doesn't even give his real name to?

I won't comment on ONLY GOD FORGIVES since its relatively new but I will say this...the lead and his adversary are both silent types so there is nothing really to grasp or connect with either and the film is both grounded in reality and trippy and almost an odd mix of Cronenberg violence and Lynch visuals with a dash of Gasper Noe style EXTREME violence.

In the end and honestly throughout the entire film, there was nothing to care about but at least unlike DRIVE, I never knew what the hell would happen next.

Edward Zwick's Last Samurai is an embarrassing self rip-off of his very own Glory.

Ironically, I listed GLORY (along with several other films) over in the "best endings" thread. Does this make Zwick our first director with an entry in both the "best" and "worst" endings categories?

I find this all the more interesting, since I wouldn't have guessed that a "worst" ending (SAMURAI) would resemble or imitate a "best" ending (GLORY). Weird, how two endings of similar structure evoke such totally opposite levels of appreciation/acceptance from viewers.

While I may not call it WORST because I love the movie - but one of the ones that leaves me really sour is The Last Samurai. I love the movie but, lets be honest, Tom Cruise surviving is seriously lame as heck. If he died in the final charge, the film would've been fully realized instead of half-assing it.

I'm in total agreement here.

Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE APES ended horribly. A solid action adventure was totally undone by an incomprehensible "twist" ending.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: PART II
(remember that this was all pre-internet, and none of us knew that the 2nd installment would end on such a cliffhanger, or that there was even a Part III).

I guess you didn't read Starlog and other pre-release coverage of the movie, because I was well aware there would be a Part III and that both films were being shot back to back. And if I knew it, it wasn't a secret. smile

Not quite. It's weird that the brothers Raimi (with Sam directing) could concoct one of my favorite endings (ARMY OF DARKNESS) and one of my most despised (DRAG ME TO HELL).

He couldn't give the money to the woman and her child because otherwise the mafia would be after them and (most likely) killing them !! Please see the movie again ...

SLEEP AWAY CAMP! Holy crap! Worst movie ever, but the ending is truly terrifying.

Yes! Especially how the "freeze framed' expression continues nearly a full 10 seconds after the credits stopped rolling.

Yeah, it was pretty common knowledge I thought...and I was just a mere disinterested teen at the time...albeit a disinterested teen that often read Starburst mag...but hey - I'm sure there were plenty of others who were unaware too smile

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes - I never understood the hatred for this ending...it's pretty obvious what happened and it FINALLY, after decades of waiting, led us to a vision of the Ape culture that Pierre Boulle originally wrote about (much as though I adore Schaffner's film, it does kind of miss this point...by several light years). I loved it...and so wished for a sequel, even though it was pretty clear very soon that it wasn't going to happen.

Actually no, the mob isn't after them. Only Ron Pearlman and Albert Brooks are as that money isn't even suppose to have been stolen and Brooks was trying to silence everyone who had a hint of what went down. If he gave her the money and she ran off no one would have gone after them especially once he was ready to go and meet and kill Brooks' character.
