Difficult one to answer, dan. I made the mistake when I was young of thinking that because I loved something (a soundtrack, for example), everybody else would love it too. How wrong was that. This is more an anecdote than anything else, but regarding films, I was absolutely blown away by Polanski's REPULSION and CUL-DE-SAC. Knowing how much my dear wife loves ROSEMARY'S BABY (and assuming she is a woman of good taste, having married me), I thought I'd treat her to my new-found Polanski masterpieces. On both occasions she was asleep within the first ten minutes. So..... I don't know. It really does depend on the person and if you know their tastes well. I obviously don't know my wife's at all, but with my brother a classic Hammer horror never fails. Other than that, people really are incredibly fickle, so it would be a very hit or miss experiment.

You invite a friend or relative over for dinner one night. He or she suggest, why don't we watch a film. Of all the movies ever made, What film would you want that person you are with to see? "The Last Supper" (Stacey Title) Halfway through look at them funny, then ask them if they would like something to drink.....
