You invite a friend or relative over for dinner one night. He or she suggest, why don't we watch a film. Of all the movies ever made, What film would you want that person you are with to see?

I'm recently experiencing a big spiritual and intellectual re-discovering of George Lucas' original Star Wars, so I would undoubtedly suggest that or his equally rewarding American Graffiti.

TO MASTAGDE-Well I was thinking more in the vein of a film you were really proud of all your life or in recent times that you would like to show to a good friend and see what they think. For instance recently I showed to a friend MY DINNER WITH ANDRE-82-

If they have time and haven't seen it - "Ben-Hur"

If I just want to show off my surround sound system - "Aliens"

If they brought the kids over - "The Incredibles"

Difficult one to answer, dan. I made the mistake when I was young of thinking that because I loved something (a soundtrack, for example), everybody else would love it too. How wrong was that.

This is more an anecdote than anything else, but regarding films, I was absolutely blown away by Polanski's REPULSION and CUL-DE-SAC. Knowing how much my dear wife loves ROSEMARY'S BABY (and assuming she is a woman of good taste, having married me), I thought I'd treat her to my new-found Polanski masterpieces. On both occasions she was asleep within the first ten minutes.

So..... I don't know. It really does depend on the person and if you know their tastes well. I obviously don't know my wife's at all, but with my brother a classic Hammer horror never fails. Other than that, people really are incredibly fickle, so it would be a very hit or miss experiment.

What others have said -- it depends on the guest's taste.

TO GRAHAM S WATT- Yes I too through the years show a film or show I really liked and the person next too me, was bored or started to fall asleep. From THE HONEYMOONERS-JACKIE GLEASON to THE SOUND OF MUSIC to PSYCHO.What is that statement, It takes all kinds to make the world go around.

Other than the guests personal tastes I would also suggest a film not well known, but one I thought was exceptional. A film that I thought deserved a bigger audience.

One of the finest films ever made. The Shawshank Redemption. Terrific story, beautifully told. And applies to a wide audience.

To a basic crowd who were not that sensitive to genre ideas THE HAUNTING-63- ROBERT WISE. However not children or people who get scared easily.

The film that jumped into my mind is AUNTIE MAME. It has something for everyone.

"The Maltese Falcon" or "Now, Voyager", depending on which gender is the majority (or who you hope to impress).

"The Last Supper" (Stacey Title)

Halfway through look at them funny, then ask them if they would like something to drink.....
