Difficult one to answer, dan. I made the mistake when I was young of thinking that because I loved something (a soundtrack, for example), everybody else would love it too. How wrong was that.
This is more an anecdote than anything else, but regarding films, I was absolutely blown away by Polanski's REPULSION and CUL-DE-SAC. Knowing how much my dear wife loves ROSEMARY'S BABY (and assuming she is a woman of good taste, having married me), I thought I'd treat her to my new-found Polanski masterpieces. On both occasions she was asleep within the first ten minutes.
So..... I don't know. It really does depend on the person and if you know their tastes well. I obviously don't know my wife's at all, but with my brother a classic Hammer horror never fails. Other than that, people really are incredibly fickle, so it would be a very hit or miss experiment.
