I would be surprised that an all-Powell concert would attract that many people compared to any of the other names (unless he's attached to some super popular film?), though that would definitely be enjoyable as 'something different'.
I look forward to seeing who they come up. The 20th Century Fox one should be a good one as well.
Well as I said above it would center on all those popular animated titles like HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, MADAGASCAR, THE LORAX, CHICKEN RUN, SHREK, RIO and KUNG FU PANDA. Not his name.
Actually the more I thought about Mark Shaiman the more I thought an incredible show could be built around him. If anybody has ever heard AMERICAN PRESIDENT, CITY SLICKERS, PATCH ADDAMS or MISERY you know his symphonic abilities are beyond question. Then there are the songs he has written for HAIRSPRAY, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, SMASH, TEAM AMERICA and SOUTHPARK THE MOVIE (One I'd love to hear but definitely won't is "Uncle Fucka" done by a full orchestra and chorus). Again, no one knows his name but his associations with big hits like SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, SISTER ACT, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, A FEW GOOD MEN, BEACHES, CITY SLICKERS and BUCKET LIST could be utilized to bring crowds in. And maybe he could be talked into recreating classic moments he was involved in with Bette Midler, the Tonight Show, Saturday Night Live and the Academy Awards on the piano. He has been everywhere and done everything in show business.
I have decided to return to this because I always assume everybody knows a composer's work like I do. Well maybe not. I'll pretend many don't know a lot about Schifrin and make a case for him starting with the "tar sequence" above from COOL HAND LUKE (used by news programs across the land) and then his "Statue of Liberty Suite" he wrote for Liberty Weekend in 1986:
