So I take it by the responses so far that no one has any interest in Fruitvale Station?

I don't live far from where the real life incident occurred, so I'm pretty familiar with the event and how blown out of proportion it was. Maybe the actual movie is different, but the ads I've seen make it look like just another "evil racist cop" flick, so one-sided that all I could do was dismiss it with a laugh.

I haven't had the chance to see it yet. I'm very curious. From some I've heard overwhelmingly positive responses; from others I hear something a little different (http://imixwhatilike.org/2013/08/13/fruitvale/). I'm debating whether to watch and judge it on its own terms as a movie, or whether to better familiarize myself with the case it's based on first.

The latest fisch update reminded me that my most anticipated 2013 film after the Coens is THE ZERO THEOREM.

Thank you for the link, mastadge (and your comments Michael24). I do have to apologize however, as I stand firmly by my assessment of the film and the interviews I've devoured with the cast, crew, family members, and community. To me, the film was a very riveting character study, and a fantastic spotlight on the social issues facing young black men (and this film is NOT just about Oscar being shot by a white police officer). On top of that, as a film it was very well-made. Technically proficient with a vérité style by an emerging young black filmmaker, stellar and believable performances by lead Michael B. Jordan and the supporting cast, and the film tackled issues which can be easily scoffed at or brushed under the table (again, this film is NOT just about Oscar being shot by a white police officer, but rather the roles which these common individuals take to arrive at these destinies). And as it is, Fruitvale Station was a decidedly grown up diversion from the endless, brainless shit which clutters movie theaters every Summer.

Another addition to my list, and I think the only film this year which I have seen on opening night...

You're Next (4+)

I have to admit, the Mumblecore filmmakers are evolving, and they are bringing some A-game to the Horror genre. You're Next is a terrific and suspenseful Thriller. Great camera work and editing, creepy and perfect soundtrack, and with a perfect dose of black humor, blood, and social subversion (also some good looking boobs on display). You're Next features perhaps the most well-developed "final girl"* since the induction of this conceit upon the Horror/Slasher genre -- a seriously cool lead female who takes agency rather than finding luck by virtue of plot mechanics and sloppy screenwriting.

*To find a detailed entry on the history and importance of the "final girl," visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_girl.

Nuts, be sure to check out Stephen Graham Jones' book The Last Final Girl.

And I will definitely be seeing Fruitvale Station -- just missed it in theaters so now will have to wait for home viewing.

Blue Jasmine. Okay, now this thread can go on extolling the greatness of CGI super-hero movies. wink

Saw two more new films last week on DVD.

Snitch, one of the best I've seen this year.

Olympus Has Fallen, which replaces The Lone Ranger as worst I've seen so far this year.
