"Jesus, are you still prattling on?"

Is that echo or are you just refering to yourself, guy who works in the equivalent of plumber business?

Or you can just admit it: you simply lacks good logic and have nothing of substance to say, in order to win any intelligent discussion (or "piss contest", as some of your bad taste buddies would call it).

Alternatively, you can just block me and call it a day, instead of being "insulted" by superior reasoning?

So that's a "yes".

Just have to chime in like to a Pavlovian feeding bell don't you? Or you just enjoy being "insulted"?
Tell you what, I'll block you then. Saves us both the trouble. Bye.

Best news I've heard all day.

Is this thread just facehugger and YOR back and forth with one another? I see Matt B making the occasional counter-argument but otherwise this thread has become an embarrassment which began with good intentions.

Sorry Mr. Coscina. frown

I can see from the main page that the Matt guy and the Nuts guy have posted some stuff (probably as trivial and meaningless as always) but thanks to the "ignore" function I can't see the content. What a great relief.

At least I don't have to see their circle jerking anymore.

Unfortunately those zombies are too obsessed with us intelligent people's discussions and they have to just step in and get "insulted."

I guess we should all just bow to Yor's and facehugger's better judgement and taste in music and let this thread die a quiet peaceful death.

I'm convinced by all their articulate and intelligent arguments. I'm throwing out all my Hanzzimmer and Jon Powell discs (forget trying to sell them at a used CD place since no one would actually pay for Zimmermuszak).

While I'm at it, I'm also chucking all the Goldsmith '80s scores that had those annoying cheesy ass synths because they sound dated. And they weren't very well integrated with the orchestra.

And I'm also not stopping there! I'm also chucking Morricone's CDs too, especially The Thing since Beltrami would have done a much better job if he weren't in diapers still playing with his own feces.

Whew! Now my CD collection is so much lighter (as is my ipod!).

Thanks Yor and facehugger! I'm so thrilled being in the presence of superior discerning musicians (you are musicians right? Since you seem to know music in and out) as yourselves!

Now I'm off to listen to some sophisticated music from Xenakis. Sure it's about the emotional equivalent of having my fingernails ripped off one by one but it's "evolved" music and heaven forbid we listen to anything that is regressive to cave man times...

Here's my personal brief rumination of Zimmer:

Even though I had been aware of film (and TV) music before, it was his THE LION KING that did it for me around Christmas 1994, when I was a wee(ish) lad of 13 summers. That score continues to be favourite of mine, as does THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. I haven't heard everything from him, but those colourful (!) scores from the 1990s will always have a special place in my collection.

I enjoyed most of his early 2000s scores as well; never found anything wrong with GLADIATOR, or even PEARL HARBOUR. But somewhere between the first PotC scores and BATMAN BEGINS he "lost" me. I can't really point my finger at as to what exactly was the reason for that, but the scores began to bleed into one another. PotC3 was a major exception and having heard the complete score, it probably ranks as my second-favourite HZ score.

I understand why Zimmer continues to be in such high demand and commands respect from the industry and love of the audience, and yet I agree with those of us who find little or nothing of artistic value in much of his recent and current music (or that of his associates, with the occasional exception). Is there anything I actively can do to change that? Of course not.

But I can always choose whether or not I want to listen to his recent scores. Since I don't own them (having only heard them in the movie), it's not a big problem anyways...and those old scores that I have been enjoying for many years are only a click away.

And if anybody sees fit to finally release the full LION KING, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT or A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN will have my money instantaneously.

On that note...I wish you all a nice Sunday afternoon/evening. smile

David, like I said, I have no problem with you, or the original article. And I respect GOOD argument (just not dumb ones using "this is just my opinion lol!" as a convenient chicken-out). I've enjoyed some conversations with you.

But please, if you REALLY WANT this thread to die like you say you do, you might refrain from pouring gasoline on fire? You know very well what I and YOR and others mean, and your sarcasm is way off the mark.

'sides, if those Zimmer fanatics REALLY want nothing more than circle jerking, maybe they should participate in some dedicated "Zimmer Da God! Only Devoted Fans should respond!" thread, instead of here, when the title is named "A POV (i.e. a POINT of VIEW)"?

And last point, I frankly don't think this thread will "die" unless a moderator strikes. Zimmer cohorts still wash unto the shore of this thread in waves, like dead crabs and rotten seaweeds. And intelligent people still want to offer their well argued points (like the above poster ChristianKuhn did).

I rest my case.

The irony here is that I was one of the most vocal forum members against Zimmer's style and philosophy of film scoring approach. Just ask internet stalker extraordinaire steb74 do dredge up some more priceless quotes from posts I made 5 years ago and not just this forum but anywhere across the fine landscape of the internet. wink

I guess I've mellowed over the years and as such, should allow facehugger and Yor the same liberties I entertained when I was very much against the R-C style of music.

I just hope we can all strive to play nicer in the sandbox.

Just sit back and enjoy YOR's funny pictures and my inane efforts to poke fun at Da Most Popular Composer Since Trilobites.

Come to think of it, Beltrami probably could make nice music playing with feces as an instrument.

I've largely stayed absent from this drivel of a thread but I do want to point out something about this. If you've listened to music you can perhaps hear certain styles which individual musicians bring to whatever output it is that they have. Johnny Marr has a particular style. It was for this style that Zimmer wrote the Inception guitar riffs. So, in that sense, yes it was only Marr who could play those parts. Because they were written for him and the budget allowed them to wrangle him in.

That's a compelling argument. But there's still a flaw: Zimmer had the predisposed notion in his head that only Johnny Marr would be able to play these riffs and he hired him based on that notion. When he then heard Marr play these riffs, he obviously heard what he wanted to hear. But that's not proof that a competent studio musician couldn't have played these riffs to the SAME effect. Even if you argue that Marr has a distinctive style which one cannot easily imitate, then there's still the question if its effect on the score is significant enough to claim that the score would have suffered from Marr's absence.

The funny thing is: there are countless of sequenced rebuilds of Inception's music on YouTube using only synthesized instruments, and some come uncannily close to sounding like the 'real' thing, including Marr's simplistic guitar riffs.

If Zimmer believes that Marr was the only person who could play these riffs, then I won't stop him to believe just that. But that has probably more to do with Zimmer's predispositions than with it being true.

I just hope we can all strive to play nicer in the sandbox.

I have young children, and from them I have learned one immutable rule... if there are no consequences for bad behavior, bad behavior will continue unchecked.

Again, I found the original article fascinating. And I like a good deal of Zimmer and Company's music. I also like just about everything else... Golden Age, Silver Age, and so on. If I don't like something, I usually try not to focus on it. Unless it is abusive, baiting behavior. That sometimes gets the best of me.

I love William Anderson's comments on the original article. Excellence. (not so much regarding the "Sebastian" kid)

I understand this to be flustered sarcasm, but Goldsmith uses of Synth is what I like most about his scores... such as it's uses in Gremlins, Explorers, Rent-A-Cop and Total Recall. I know some would disagree, but it has a certain charm
