So, are there any of us TD fans here that can say they've kept up with all of the releases?

To start off with, I made a real effort to get everything I could find back in the late 70's. But when their CD's started to appear, I cut myself off from the vinyls and concentrated on those instead. I even tried to keep up with the soundtracks--in many cases for movies that I'd never even seen--LOL!

Then the Miramar era ended and they began issuing albums on TDI. That's when the seemingly-endless remix albums started coming out and when I started tapering off on buying. Up until then I was still able to make time to actually listen to them all, but then I started to think that Edgar and Jerome became too obsessed with remixing the past and not paying enough attention to making brand-new material. I know there is new material out there, but I just found it too confusing and time-consuming to weed it out. Voices In The Net is a tremendous help, but it took more cash than I have. So I pretty much stopped with the "Tang-Go" compilation and "Mota Atma".

Chime in with your experiences in collecting their albums. All are welcome.

Dang it! - based on the title I was hoping this thread was going to be in some way related to a new release of TD's work for "THE KEEP"!

Heh. At this point I fear the only way we will ever see it is if some guy breaks into Eastgate, knocks Froese unconscious and carries away the tapes.

I've kept up with most...but not all...of their releases.

The parade of concert albums haven't always been my cup of tea and I've passed on a lot of those. Samples of some of the newest albums,STARMUS - SONIC UNIVERSE and the Cruise To Destiny convinced me to hold off on those.

But, albums like Machu Picchu, Finnegans Wake, Mona Da Vinci, Island Of The Fay - these I've picked up and really enjoyed and have gotten lots of replay.

Even Dream Mixes 4 & 5 for me are solid listens, much better than the earlier "mixes" albums

In fact, my amount is very similar to yours, except mine would be shifted back chronologically to 1970--ending at about the 60 CD mark.

I noticed you had nothing from before 1979. Are those earlier albums not your cup of tea?

Well, the 70-73 stuff is absolutely not my cup of tea. They started to get more interesting in 74, but so far I still haven't bought any of the 70-78 albums. I guess I have a bit more of a commercial taste.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I love the old stuff, but many of my faves are from the Schmoelling & Haslinger periods too.

The early albums, Electronic Meditation, Alpha Centuri etc, aren't for me. But the Virgin era is no doubt a must have... there are 2 very affordable collections Virgin released in the last few years :

I enjoyed the Private Music years tremendously. I remember at the time thinking, "What? A sax?!". But, hey, it worked like gangbusters.

Those Virgin Boxes are excellent value for the money, and I'm a sucker for CD's that gather up rare single edits. They also apparently fix some of the mastering issues that, according to some pedants at the Steve Hoffman Forum, plagued the SBM remasters. I'm not exactly sure what those issues were, but the SBM's sounded pretty dang good to me.

I can even enjoy the vocal albums--in smaller doses, though.

Yes, in addition to Tyger, Madcap's Flaming Duty is really good. I think I'll buy Under Cover too in the future. Cyclone was quite horrible, though.

I think that having a concept can make all the difference too. "Tyger" illustrates that quite well. It wasn't just a bunch of random tunes with vocals slapped on them. Very artful, that one.

"Cyclone" is a bit of a toughie, I think. "Madrigal Meridian" creates a nice vibe, though I think it could have been twice as listenable at half the length. The electro-violin was a nice change.
But those other 2 tracks... just a little too "Jon Anderson-ish" for comfort. An intriguing misfire, one might say.
