For good or bad, I don't think it's really about whether or not a film is 'worthy' of being mocked anymore to them. That was the M.O. for MST3K but under the Rifftrax banner they seem to do it just for the act of doing it, to see what jokes, puns or riffs they can fit in to whatever film, not that there's something inherently faulty about it. For instance, their riff on the classic House on Haunted Hill didn't ever seem to trash the movie as being incompetent but managed to be funny just by playing off the events on screen. That said, I still think their riffs on horrible B-movies remain their most enjoyable bits as those by their nature have much more potential (and honestly, when they do just outright trash a movie worth trashing, you can tell they're more in their element). Of course, I'm a huge MST3k fan, so I'm going to naturally lean more toward being happy that they're still able to do their thing at all after all these years, but I get the other side too.

MST started off as a loving parody of b-movies. Even when they were terrible - Coleman Francis! - there was a sense of love involved. Joel liked iffy movies and even defended them at times. There was an innocence to his years that are sorely lacking in the Mike seasons (which are rife with their own good and bad things).
However, with Rifftrax, they're working on a non-budgeted issue. They depend upon people already owning the movie, so they can just release a MP3. So they do Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek 2... you know, DVDs people own. And they're snarky about it: it's not about poking fun at a silly Canon film that everyone forgot about, its about beating down something you have yourself (probably because you enjoy it) because they can't build anything themselves.
They exist as an entity now simply to "take the piss out of it", as the British say. It's no longer about the fun of the genre, its about how far they can go with their act.
Funny enough, Mike himself called out my opinion on Twitter yesterday and I gently put my thumb on the issue. I probably should've gone at him like Don Logan but I can't damn a man for running his meal ticket into the ground if that's what he wants to do. I just wish he wasn't doing it to something I use to enjoy.
