You can probably read about this (sickening) news story in your local papers I'm guessing. The Westboro Baptist Church plans on picketing the funerals of The 19 Arizona Firefighters who were all killed over the weekend defending their town from a huge wildfire. What the friends and families of these young men must now be going through!

I've been a Christian for a very long time, and, while I don't believe in judging others, I have to say that I cannot see any Christian attributes in the Westboro Baptist group.
They are hate mongers, and they seem to enjoy hurting others.

Part of a zealot's mindset is the urge to create controversy everywhere they go. They know full well that such disruption can, and often does, provoke a strong reaction. That reaction, depending on its type, will then provide the zealot with the justification to claim martyrdom.

Westboro are not just an embarrassment to spiritual people everywhere, but to normal human nature as well.

Nothing new under the Sun, unfortunately.

I cannot stand these people!

I say, turn the hoses on them.

Well, they protest everything else so not in the slightest bit surprised...shameful, just shameful.

If they hold true to recent public announcements, they'll say they're going but they won't show.

Like the Klan, they are distractingly irrelevant. And obviously with absolutely no sense of right or decency. Just a painfully obstinate agenda.

The administration is right to criticise the tactics used by these people. Personally, I would have went further and labelled them a hate group.

I was just remembering that a few months ago I was aimlessly surfing YouTube. I came across a clip of Russell Brand and he had a couple of Westboro gents on his show. Slyly, and quite rightly, he allowed them to speak for themselves...

This group is made up of complete and total losers who have to take it out on someone.

I've not been a Russell Brand fan myself, but I give him huge points for handling that situation amazingly well. I watched it only because I've been curious about what the Westboro Baptists actually believe.
There is enough twisted Scriptural theology on both sides of that "discussion" that I could spend the rest of this year writing about it, and I'd probably still need another year to finish.
Man, this is tragic.

So what do they have against the firefighters? Do they mean that any person that dies does so because God punished him or her because of their sin?

I believe it's something to do with allowing gays in various services - making them "fag enablers".

But who cares what these mindless fucks believe? It's just the delusions of a diseased man, passed on to successive generations through brainwashing from birth. Nothing new there.

The authorities should gather up as many of them as they can and do likewise with a cities gang members. Put them in an inclosed arena and let them tear each other apart.

What's left can be served to the zoo animals.

Westboro also protests other funerals, including our men in service, such as the late Chris Kyle. And they've harrassed a little girl, too. Inbetween their sessions of inbreeding and falsely laying claim to God and the church, they also were invited by the F.B.I. in 2011 to partake in an antiterrorism training program. I guess next the F.B.I. will invite the KKK to teach a course on tolerance.

There's been minor victories, though.

Various people from Texas A&M created a human chain and blocked them. I also recall that their postive chanting drowned out the Westboro chants:

There was another one where they got blocked (I don't recall where).

And then this EX member recetnyly started talking about what goes on behind the scenes:

They're vile little creatures but I'd fight to the death to defend their Constitutionally protected right to speak. As disgusting as it is when they protest fallen heros, say God has sent a shooter that masscred people, and so forth, it's far worse to silence them, or other dickless wonders like the KKK and NAMBLA. At the end of the day they are words, and I don't fear their words. I do, however, fear any government, state, or city that silences a person or group of people because they don't like what they hear. It's not a new quote, but passage of time changes it nonetheless: People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.
Hinedsight is a funny thing 'cause once you have it, the consequences have already occured and history tells unforgiving stories of what happens when you give up some liberty, some freedom, and take what was once an unalienable right and deliver it into the hands of a despot (be they progressive, statist, Marxist, etc) whom can decide it, nobody is safe, not even those who delude themselves into believing they are on the despot's side (or the side of future unknown despots). Today it's their voice, tomorrow it may be yours. First they came for the church's, Westboro's freedom of speech, then they came for the KKK's freedom of speech, then they came for mine, and there was nobody left to defend it.

Freedom is a hard word to define- We all heard of that statement. to be totally free, means nobody is free.I would in humble manner give up a sought of freedom for a good cause. To have too much freedom can be dangerous. One can say a tyrant has absolute total freedom.

What you are describing is not freedom but rather the verbal fumblings that are bandied about by certain political leaning people and groups. Freedom is, after all, nothing without morals, ethics, the civil society, and law; are you are free to go to the mall on Satuday? Yes. Are you free to poke somebody in the eye? No.
Are you free to steal your neighbor's car? Of course not.

You can give up your freedom or what ever else, as you personally want, but leave it the law and Constitution alone -- that is everybody's. And some of those rights are unalienable, not your's, your representative's, or president's to give or deny.

Again, you are mixing up the idea of "freedom" with personal ethics, as per your tyrant analogy. A man and a wife have sex. A rapist has sex. Can it be said both make love? No. One makes love, the other rapes. Again, it comes down to the mores and the ethics of the individule. And a tyrant, or despot, only has as much power as people are willing to give him. Not all despots comes to power straight away or by taking it (such as in Cuba decades ago), some get this because the people willingly give away some of their freedom here, some of their freedom there; they don't know what they are doing, societal ills are creating preasure, eventually somebody steps forward that would never have been able to before had they not had the leadway they now do because of what the people have given here and there, and they promise they can cure all their ills, just give them a little more.....

I think the WBC is a false front. I think they do not believe any of what they say they believe-- and quite the opposite.

I think "Westboro Baptist" is a false-flag operation intended to smear Christianity, and to dirty up "by association" (where none exists), all opponents of gay political goals.

Think about it: everything WBC says and does, without exception, harms the side they are supposedly closer to and thus helps the gay people whom the "church" claims to hate. Since Westboro Baptist can see this as plain as day, and yet they continue, it follows that this is their intention.

TO JUSTIN-I agree with what you are saying, a lot of logical points. People do bit by bit , society does bit by bit start to lose a lot of there freedom. Letting people in power take more and more from them. All wrong should and can be stop early on preventing such tyranny to flourish till it is nearly too late and you are faced with the reality. That one with a gun can hold off hundreds of people, etc etc. But we can't get political here so I won't say why I feel ------------- should be small not large.
