Indeed. Very strange that there's no THE FLY. I'm no Shore fan (except the LOTR scores), but I'm always on the lookout for small 'samples' of his scores that could work as a listening experience. Maybe something like this would suffice.

Not strange at all..

SILVA just hasn't recorded anything from THE FLY as of this date.

Most of this compilation has appeared on earlier releases

The only ones that look like they might be new would be SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and DEAD RINGERS.

In any case, it's a nice overview of Shore's career.

Exactly. It's just another one of their run-of-the-mill re-packagings of old recordings. Nothing new here.

Oh - there's enough new on here to make me want a copy!

Which is something that almost every other record label on the planet does?

Taking the master recordings they own and repackaging them to appeal to different audiences and markets?

What is your point exactly?

IT"S BAD?

I am not a fan of Howard Shore but I must admit that if the CD had included some previously unreleased music then even I would have been interested. So Mr. Thaxton I think that his point is that it does not include anything new that has never been released before. Most of us film score fans already have majority of the scores that appear on several compilation albums so unless it is something rare on it we will probably pass.

There are at least two newly recorded tracks on the album - granted, they're not rarities, but they are brand new recordings which will have nuances different to their OST counterparts. For those of us who can see value in new recordings of previously released material, they qualify as previously unreleased.

Also, these releases aren't typically marketed to the "film score fans who have the majority of the scores" - they are marketed to the more casual fans who want a sampling of the music. And Silva seems to be doing all right selling to them, considering the frequency of these releases.

...not to mention, of course, that those "more casual fans" might get the bug from releases like this and become tomorrow's producers and owners of niche labels...there's a great spot in the market for compilations like these.

But you are making a INCORRECT PREMISE.

You are assuming this release is aimed at the FILM SCORE COLLECTOR MARKET...

You are mistaken..

It's a aimed at a broader audience who know Shore from is LORD OF THE RINGS and such project.

They included tracks from the more well known projects he has done to date that they have recorded that is in their catalog.

Also, they have done recording of the theme to DEAD RINGERS, which the soundtrack recording has been out of print for nearly 20 years and ever been available on ITUNES or such ever.

So IMHO, it's a pretty cool release that is a great primer for someone on the career of Howard Shore.

Indeed. Very strange that there's no THE FLY.

I find it very strange that anybody would find this very strange. Is it strange that there's no "Big," no "Mrs. Doubtfire," no "The Aviator"? This is a sampling. Some things are presented, some are not. How can that be strange?

As for the wisdom of a release like this that doesn't appeal to our tiny niche of film score fans that already have all this… well, Silva has released compilations like this for decades. If they didn't sell, don't you think they'd know it by now?

Well, so why can`t they do a release that is aimed at BOTH the casual listener AND the film score collector. WHY does it just have to be aimed at one of them.

Let`s say that they had all those tracks that they have (for the casual listener) plus at least one track that is from a previously unreleased score then you have something for everyone so that would have been more interesting thing at least for me.

By the way I can mention The CD Hollywood Stars: Kevin Costner. Most of the tracks on that CD had music that was featured on soundtracks that I already had. However that CD included not one but two tracks from The Bodyguard. Back then Silvestri`s music from The Bodyguard was (mostly) unreleased but I bought that CD just for those two tracks even if I had mostly all the other tracks. That was such a release that both the casual listener and the film score collector could enjoy.

Because one audience is vastly larger then the other...

It's not aimed at folks who think just because the soundtrack album was issued 20 years and is now out of print that it's still "Readily Available"...

It's aimed at folks who might have liked a number of the films listed on the package or enjoy the work of Howard Shore, but don't owe every last single soundtrack album he has ever had released.

Nuff said.

As one of the (apparently) few "film score buffs" that does enjoy and buy these releases, I can speak to the power/interest that they drive in people who aren't - I've received multiple compilations for holidays and family members/non-score fans have taken immediate interest and in some cases bought their own copy. My Harry Potter fan brother-in-law saw me get the 2-disc Silva HP compilation) - buying 8 Harry Potter film score CDs may have been impractical for him, but a well=priced two-disc compilation suited his needs perfectly, rerecording or no.

Yeah, in later years I've started to re-appreciate compilations like this too -- even though I'm not in the main target audience (obviously, I'm in the target audience as far as someone who likes film music). Strange how one veers a bit back to the customs of the early film score discovery years later in life.
