I never noticed Spock's eye shadow before!
It's quite noticeable on the Bluray restoration. Recently, while writing a story about the new Star Trek film, I got to speak with a rather brilliant fellow who did the special effects makeup for 'Into Darkness' and whose father applied makeup for the original show. Apparently the shading above Spock's eyes was designed to suggest Spock's copper-based green blood. They continued this in a very subtle way with Zachary Quinto's makeup on the recent films.
In my research, I learned that while developing the original series, before they went with the green blood idea, they considered making Spock red, to go along with his Satanic pointed ears. They abandoned that for two reasons: Leonard Nimoy voted against it, and many people viewed the show back then on black and white TVs where red makeup read as very dark grey. I think they made the right decision, and they were mostly pretty subtle with Spock's green pigment. You don't often get to see it, despite McCoy's frequent allusions to Spock's peculiar anatomy, however when Kirk and Spock get flogged in the Nazi planet episode, Kirk is later seen covered with red slashes, while Spock's whiplashes are green. On Bluray, it's very graphic!
Emily Banks was so lovely in that clip (the yeoman doing the rubbing). Great episode (Shore Leave), beautiful score (Gerald Fried).
