MONDAY, JUNE 24

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2---director/co-writer Roland Emmerich said Will Smith won't be in the sequel, "Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much." He added some of the original cast might return, "We have like maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film, and the other half are people who are new." Earlier, Bill Pullman said his character, Thomas Whitmore, is in the sequel.

WORLD WAR Z---the sequel is underway at Paramount Pictures with Brad Pitt returning. Also, this is a synopsis of the movie's original ending, which included a "large-scale battle" in Russia, that was later reshot:

"The plane, bound for Moscow, safely lands. All but the healthy people are executed, those who aren't are drafted into service and Gerry's phone is taken. Months later, a now bearded Gerry has become an efficient member of Russia's zombie-clearing squad who are now tasked with clearing the capital's subway tunnels.
Using Lobos (a zombie killing tool from the book), the team make their way through, only to emerge above ground into the "Battle of Red Square" which is described as a much larger set piece than the Israel scenes. Gerry and his new British friend Simon head back into the tunnels where Gerry figures out the zombies are having an extremely difficult time with the Russian winter.
They try to inform the Russian command to extinguish their fires and let the undead freeze. They also meet up again with Segen who is in the clutches of a rape-friendly Russian soldier. Saving her, Gerry gets to a Russian general and is able to turn the tide of battle. As things quieten down, he calls his wife.
Turns out the wife is stuck in a refugee camp in the Everglades where she's been forced to be the reluctant love slave of the soldier (Matthew Fox) who rescued them from the rooftop in the early scenes. He warns Gerry to start a new life, Gerry does not and sets out with Simon and Segen across eastern Russia until they find a boat and head for the Oregon coast in a fierce effort to get his wife back."

JURASSIC PARK 4---a "reliable source" said the sequel plot is set in present day Isla Nublar where John Hammond's Jurassic Park is operating successfully as envisaged in the original movie. A Sea World-like Isla Nubar Lagoon features undersea dinosaurs who leap out of the water to feed on sharks hung up by the staff. The Tyrannosaurs and Velociraptors are "tamed" with muzzles on the Velociraptors. They will be used to combat an all-new villainous dinosaur.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2---Felicity Jones commented on if she is playing Black Cat, "It's TOP secret. I can tell you that she's sort of on the baddie's side, but I can't explain much more than that."

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES---William Fichtner (BLACK HAWK DOWN) confirmed he'll play the Shredder in the reboot movie, "I play Shredder. It is cool. It's one of those things that came along where I thought, 'Really? Let me think about this for a minute.' [Laughs] Then I was like, 'Yeah, OK, this sounds like a journey.' I'm very glad that it worked out..."

MAGGIE---Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this horror movie as a farmer whose daughter is slowly turning into a zombie after a zombie plague spreads across the nation. Chloe Moretz also stars.

HANNIBAL---creator Bryan Fuller commented on Will Graham's future in Season 2, "He will be incarcerated, and we will be dealing with all of the threads of that. We need to see all of the things happen that would happen in that scenario. Will Graham needs to go on trial for the murders that he may or may not have committed. Jack has to be brought before a review board for his participation in what happened to Will, and Hannibal, as Will's psychiatrist, is going to continue to try to help Will see the truth that Hannibal wants him to see. The ball is up in the air in so many ways for Jack and Hannibal and Will. The fun of Season 2 will be spiking those balls."

DOWNTON ABBEY---Paul Giamatti will join the cast in Season 4 as the playboy brother of Countess Cora.

JUPITER ASCENDING---sci fi movie from the Wachowskis in which Mila Kunis plays a janitorial worker who is marked for death because she has the same DNA as the ruler of the universe. Channing Tatum commented on his role, "I’m a splice, splices are essentially built in a test tube. I’m a hybrid wolf and human. And half albino, so I’m a little defective."

OH MY GOD: IT'S FULL OF STARS: A JOURNEY TO THE EDGE OF SCIENCE FICTION---four-part BBC America documentary on science fiction in movie, television and books is underway. No premiere date was announced.

HER---Scarlett Johansson has replaced Samantha Morton as the female voice of a computer operating system in this movie about a lonely writer who falls in love with the operating system. Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Rooney Mara star.

INTO THE WOODS---Anna Kendrick will play Cinderella in this movie based on the Broadway musical. Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tracey Ullman also star.

VALHALLA RISING 2---director Nicolas Winding Refn hopes to film a sequel to his viking movie with Mads Mikkelsen returning, "I had this idea of Mads going back to the origins of this character. But make the movie in Tokyo."

I'm so glad they reshot the third act. That sounds awful and so full of cliches, and would have been a huge change compared to the rest of the film. The ending as it is now is much better and more creative.

I hate to say this about anyone, but I simply don`t enjoy seeing Will Smith onscreen. I`m sure he`s a great human being, I just don`t want to see him participating in dramatic theater. For me, my interest in Independence Day 2 just rose slightly.

As for Valhalla Rising 2, great that a sequel is being pursued. I just hope it has a less artsy, abstract head-tilting end half than the first one. Otherwise, Mikkelsen was awesome as a gritty anomalous killer.

Valhalla Rising 2 Addendum: a little more conventional, direct storytelling this go...

I love seeing Will Smith on-screen - but his "Will Smith" character was fresh (to many cinema audiences) when ID4 came out...I just can't see it working now in a film like this...

...but looking forward to it immensely.

Symbolism?

I went and searched for a picture of William fichtner, since I wasn't familiar, and immediately I found a funny comment about the casting from some sight called "AV Club":

"[HEADLINE] Ninja Turtles casts William Fichtner as Shredder after all Japanese actors refuse, apparently

Such are the tough decisions one has to make when you're Michael Bay."

Boy, I'm tired of fucking zombie films.

There aren't many young actresses for whom being The Girl in a lighthearted comedy would count as playing against type, but Miss Moretz is certainly one of them.

A very underrated, and underused, actor.
