Haven´t seen "Jack Ryan" yet - but I loved Pine in "Star Trek Into Darkness" and the little seen "People like us".
I guess there´s a huge backlash against him because he is, well, rather good looking.
Happens to lots of actors with the same problem. Having been a movie critic, I can honestly say that there were colleagues who, well, were not that easy on the eye and admitted to writing scathing reviews of some "too handsome" actors while praising actors who are rather, um, ugly.
I´m not saying this is the case here, of course. Just giving an additional opinion.
I have nothing against his looks, good or otherwise. I've enjoyed many a performance by other 'good looking actors'!! I just think there was a wit and exhuberance to him in Star Trek 2009 that I haven't seen since.
I pretty much hated everything about this film. I wouldn't say I've been a huge fan of the previous Ryan films, but I remember liking them (and their scores) more or less. This one just rubbed me up the wrong way in every way. I've never been partial to Keira Knightleys simpering chinny pouting acting? style, so she got on my nerves from the off. Costner! I don't remember his facial expression or delivery changing during any of the scenes he was in. Richard Gere must have been busy. I liked Pine in the first Star Trek reboot but he seems to have had a charisma bypass since then. The less said about Branagh and his Russian bad guy role the better, I think. The plot seemed to take all the boring, exposition bits from the Mission Impossible and Bourne films, jettison the fun and excitement and leave it there. And I was incredulous by the end at the unbelievable contrivances we were expected to swallow. And the score!!! I have heard the CD so I know there are some okay cues on there, but you wouldn't know it from the film. The Russian choir cue is barely there and we get 20 seconds of the Ryan Mr President track before it's dialled out for more incessant thump thump thump. The only thing I did enjoy was seeing my fair city of Liverpool being used to double for Moscow at night during the car chase sequence. Very cool. Otherwise, a misfire on all counts for me.

I haven't seen this movie but I have to say that I really like the "Ryan, Mr. President" cue from Doyle on the soundtrack. I've listened to this piece multiple times. The rest of the score is a lot of action filler, but this cue is a good representation of what you get when you mix strong orchestral writing with modern action elements.
The best track from this score. Since I love Doyle in this kind of mode, it's also one of the best single tracks from 2014 for me. The rest of the score, with the exception of two or three other tracks, unfortunately falls short of this track's magnificence, but it's still an accomplished work by Doyle in a somewhat new (at the time) genre.
