I enjoyed reading both reviews by Chris and James. Glad to see them both posted. We all know the "different strokes" cliché, and reading different points of view simply reminds us that we have different taste buds. Some may like a fine Malbec and some may prefer a mellow Merlot. That's hardly the same thing. A proper analogy would be a fine Malbec and a badly made, characterless Malbec. It's about QUALITY. The combination of bland/non-existing themes, monotonous approach, pop-blown-out-of-proportion structure, pop/rock-mistaken-for-symphonic-sound orchestrations adds up to a bad score. It's not what Merlot is to Malbec, but what Grandma's Farm Red is to Chateau Margaux. Do you really think it's surprising that most people who adore/write positive "reviews" of Zimmer's work have little or no knowledge of music vocabulary and grammar?

why don't you just outright say that these people are uneducated morons because that's obviously what you imply. Zimmer does not write orchestral music so why should he be judged as if he did? Well, if he does not write "orchestral music" why does he use an orchestra to perform it?

I also wonder why Zimmer fans always get defensive when being confronted with negative reviews (like the very perceptive, analytical one published by James Southall)? Could be a coincidence. It's bad music because it PRETENDS to be more than it actually is musically, by using grandiloquent-yet-empty devices and simplistic patterns, blown out of proportion by employing resources this simple music does neither require nor justify. It's pompous and self-serious without the compensating musical substance. In my book, that adds up to VERY bad music. Not that this bombastic yet dumb approach is exclusive to the Zimmer Factory. Much mainstream pop/rock music these days uses the same "wall of sound" approach of overbearing yet undernourished, pompous yet unoriginal and simplistic patterns/arrangements, a good example of that is Rhianna. And it works, because today's teens (the core audience for BOTH this kind of film and this kind of music) are completely and utterly daft. It's not their fault, because there's little chance of escaping the multimedia onslaught, really). Yet it' still a fact. Why are Zimmer fans so sensitive... he asks and then answers his own question: 1) Typical "reviews" on this board call the music 'bad', 'simple', 'dumb', 'without substance', etc... without offering any real examples of how the music is bad or doesn't work in the context of the film or is against what the director requested. These are the same words offered up for any Zimmer score, which are simply veiled attempts to hide personal biases. We get it, but why keep posting the same thing on all Zimmer threads... over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... 2) The "reviews" then degrade to some form of insult or name calling. Most of these end up referring to those who like the music stupid or idiots or 'daft', because they don't ultimately accept the opinion of that particular author, no matter how many times they post it! 3) And this is my personal favorite... the "reviews" get to a point where some opinion/bias/feeling is labeled as 'fact'. There are no 'facts' in film music except for things like release dates, track titles, etc... Once someone tries to label their OPINIONS as fact, they pretty much loose all credibility. Look, I get it... you don't like this score and you are free to post what you want about this score. But when a 'review' includes broad generalizations, obvious biases, and name calling, then you're asking for a fight. The funny thing is, I'm not a big Zimmer fan. I could really take or leave most of his music. But nothing you or anybody else here says will have any impact on whether or not I buy his music. I just wish I had massive amounts of free time you guys have to keep writing about it. -HS

There are even some quite well music educated people who destroyed Zimmer's "Man of Steel" using musical terms. 2) All the name calling start from zimmerities, as YOR pointed before. Zimmerities are the ones with NO substancial arguments to defend their master's work. 3) Zimmer "music" is simpleton and he has no real skill to compose for an orchestra. This is not opinion. This is fact. Sometimes his "music" are not that bad and does not harm the movies. This is YOR's opinion. To some people, his music is always "awesome" and helps the movies (anoter opinion). So, get your facts right before start pointing fingers to others.
