Instead of just letting the characters emote and do, they talk about it first, during and after. Endless harangues and explanations and lectures and accusations and whining. I remember going to see it in the Odeon Leicester Square (London, UK), and getting a nice seat too, hoping for an engrossing couple or so hours. Instead I found myself dropping off to sleep halfway through. I 'hate' to admit it but Malick seems to be a snore inducer to me. I felt the same with 'The New World'. The Rock is a self absorbed pro football player that finds out he has a 8 year old daughter. He resists it at first, spends time with her, comes to love her, becomes less self-absor..... YAWN ..... The only reason I went at the time was to see the Star Trek First Contact trailer. The internet back then wasn't what it is now, so I wanted to see the trailer in all its glory. I left about halfway through. Just total nonsense. I'd say about ten years ago, I went to an indie with my wife called Sunshine State. I zoned out for the entire movie. After we left, I asked her, "What was that movie about?" Terrible. I know this is slightly unrelated, but my worst *experience* ever at the movies was when I was in high school. I went to see Schindler's List on a date. Seriously...on a date. It seemed like a good idea at the time because we both were Spielberg fans and enjoyed history. After the movie ended, my date cried all the way to the car thinking about what she saw. Indeed, after the end credits a woman in the audience yelled out that she'd buy anyone a drink if he/she could explain what she just saw! Oh come on! Yeah, been there too... took a date to see Ironweed with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep living in the Depression Era gutter. I know; great visuals, etc., and I usually enjoy Kubrick films. Just indulgent and dumb. Not that it didn’t have great ideas, it did. But like others of its ilk it came off as a “Scene Movie” (“Okay, in this scene Wendy finds Jack has typed the same words over and over. Ooh! Wow, in this scene a river of blood flows down the hallway! Eeew! Now, Wendy looks into a room and sees some weird sex act! Gag! Was it real? Hey! I’ve got one! - In this scene we see if anyone notices the wallpaper! Killer!”). And how come Halloran’s Shining didn’t work well enough to warn him about Jack waiting for him with an axe? After 5 minutes i was bored stiff. Ninety minutes of absolute tedium. btw I think we should change the title of this thread to include home video.
