No one has any comments on mountain scores?

I'm sure there was a thread here about mountain music, Thor. Surprised you didn't put up the link! It might have been "Best Score for a Mountain Film" or something, and of course it ended up with people just posting the titles of films that had mountains in them. A bit like the thread "Scores Which Evoke Water", where people posted the song from The Love Boat.

Anyway, about your show - I listened to it. Didn't understand a word! Still, I know you must put a lot of work into these things. One question, and it's kind of a follow-on from my previous comments... Were these just music tracks from films with mountains in them, or did you deliberately try to choose cues which evoke the sense of climbing and dizzying heights? I only ask (it's not a criticism) because I was surprised at how little the selections evoked that feeling in me. For instance "Training With George" from THE EIGER SANCTION is a great piece of music, but the track "Top of the World" is the one which really conjures up images in my head of majestic mountain-tops and the thrill of getting to the summit.

At the risk of sounding like someone who posts links to The Love Boat song for "Scores Which Evoke Water", it's never the wrong moment to mention yet again Humphrey Searle's truly wonderful score for THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN (OF THE HIMALAYAS), which although not really about a mountain (see?), does have a lot of great music for trekking through the snow. I feel it really does capture the awe, mystery, adventure - and even plodding hell - of the subject.

Thanks for the comments, Graham. I guess I shouldn't expect a lot of feedback for these Norwegian-language episodes (although I've also done 10 English-language episodes so far, and more to come).

My goal was to select movies that had mountains as a core element of the story, not just movies that happened to have mountains or a mountain sequence in them at some point. And yes, now that you mention it, I do seem to remember an earlier thread that went in that direction eventually.

I also wanted to have a little bit of stylistic variety, so even though a cue like "George Sets the Pace" from EIGER SANCTION doesn't really connote mountainscapes (more like a baroque jazz melancholy), it's still a fascinating angle in a film of this kind.

The only film I took a bit of a chance on, is MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON. It's been many years since I saw the film, but I do seem to remember the actual Mountains of the Moon figuring prominently in it as the two British guys search for the source of the Nile. However, my memory might be playing tricks on me.

Cheers Thor. I imagine that MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON would have a lot of mountains in it, given the subject matter, but I think there might be a lot of chatting inside drawing rooms and tents too. I had a quick zip through the film on YT.

Excellent interview and choices Thor! I wish you had Doyle there as well as the two were a hoot during the press conference; they should do a two man show with all their anecdotes and business wisdoms.

Thanks for inviting me, Thor! This was a completely new thing to do for me and I was a bit nervous, but it turned out to be a lot of fun! (and boy, did it get nerdy.. smile )

You managed brilliantly, Nils -- and the tone of the thing (informal, nerdy, energetic etc.) was just PERFECT! Too bad most people here can't understand Norwegian, but hopefully it will be noticed by the few Scandinavians that we DO have.
