While I'm certainly not crazy about Star Trek Into Darkness, I actually find it a huge improvement over its predecessor which has, aside from what I gather are recurring J. J. directorial annoyances (excessive lens flare everywhere, etc.), some of the biggest fundamental story problems of almost any Star Trek movie or episode, on top of fan-maddening implications for canon and visually repellent, nonsensical production design (these later offenses being carried over to the new movie, of course, but oh well). By comparison, I don't find the new movie nearly so objectionable (though this is my first impression after a single very recent viewing and not having had much time to mull it over yet). I do still have problems with the new movie that are specific to it (as opposed to applying to the first one as well), but on the whole I like it a great deal more than the first, at least for the moment.

Dursin's review, for me, is SPOT ON! My only disagreement is with the score, which I loved. It helped keep me interested, in fact, because once the big reveal took place I was finished with this movie for the most part. And it should be noted that I loved the 2009 film and have been a die-hard Trek fan since about 1972 at the age of 5. I wanted to like this movie but had reservations given the rumours that had been floating around. I never dreamed, however, that my worst fears about this film would come true. Sad. Sooo many story possibilities out there for this "universe" and this is what they came up with. What a f*%&in' mess!

Seth Rogen?!?
Good god man!!
That would result in universal armageddon with the Enterprise converted into nothing more than a gigantic bong capable of warp speed. An intergalactic Pineapple Express, if you will.

… it would also give John Cho the opportunity to portray Harold and Sulu…
if the crew gets the munchies and takes a break at White Castle.

I have no interest and/or love for the original series of Star Trek movies (or television shows, I grew up on Star Wars) but enjoyed Star Trek 2009 and I m sure I will enjoy this one. Love the score on cd and can't wait to hear it in the movie.
