Jenk, do you wanna identify to whom your ire is aimed?
Twould also be nice if folks realized 'differences' is just another word for personal interpretation and it's not a black-and-white it can be only ONE way of looking at something.
Everyone's entitled to their own planet of perspective and if the gray levels of Life and Art are too complicated, then it's still a win-win situation.
Respect goes both ways - either someone wants to be 'right' or someone truly wants to communicate and have a healthy discourse.
Make no mistake: we're always on the latter syde.
If that makes us the intolerant enemy, hay ... it's hardly the worst we've been called (aside from asking if we even actually Care).
[ Oh, and PhillyJay, we figger it takes far more courage to remain true to one's convictions as you did in the example u cited rather than automatically fall-in-line with the 'accepted' doctrine like good cinematic soldiers  , no? ]

No ire intended, nor would said ire be aimed at anyone in particular that I can think of, at least not here. Actually, I find most of the people on this site to be quite pleasant and civil, or else I wouldn't post here. You'd be surprised --- or maybe you wouldn't, if you seach the net with any frequency --- at how intolerant people can be of other opinions, particularly on some fan-based sites (whatever the topic may be).
"It's my way, or you're an idiot!" seems to be the general approach to discourse on those sites. I stay away from the sites like that; I find it too frustrating to try to have an intelligent, or even calm, discussion. I know it's silly, but I find my *own* blood pressure starting to go up after awhile, and it's just not worth it.
And like Dan (kind of) said, "It's just one opinion"...

ARCHIE WINSTON of THE NEW YORK POST, I thought was a interesting critic because he unlike so many others would write in a way where he would not tell his readers something was good or bad based on his own narrow minded likings before he saw the film[REX REED, for one] . ARCHIE would often put in his reviews, the comment, if this is the type of film you enjoy[kung fu, horror, Sci-Fi, action, etc etc] you probably will like it, love it or be a bit disappointed. He gave the impression all genres have worth and that people who are watching Bruce lee karate films are not looking for the same things a audience who is watching HAMLET. Instead of like other critics who would look down at certain genres before even seeing a film, who will give THE EXORCIST 2 Stars legend of hell house one star and any other genre film one star, leaving genre fans with the knowledge this guy just hates genre films so what is the sense of reading his reviews, Archie was a friend to all films. People sadly have tried since the beginning of time to repress each individual's likings,but this is dead wrong, as so often said, unless you are doing something like yelling fire in a crowded movie house or harming another, everybody's got a right to their opinion.--------------------NEOTRINITY- you ask me what I think opinion is, far from a easy answer- a person's viewpoint based on how he see's the world around him with all the senses giving to him. hopefully with good will , sensitivity, wisdom , intelligence and direct logic.

We well remember Archer Winston and regard him in much the same unusually mellow manner as you describe. Far from succumbing to some of the kamikaze tactics most New York annihilators (hardly 'critics', let alone royal Reviewers) reveled in, Mr. Winston had a middle-of-the-road mild mannered style that was as generally charming as it was specifically open.
And you thought DINOSAURS were the only species thus sadly extinct ...

I finally got around to TOKYO STORY.

After reading this, I can add a few more.
Have seen bits and pieces, but not the whole films, of REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE and EAST OF EDEN.
There are a LOT of John Ford films I've never seen; westerns just never did it for me, maybe because when I was growing up, TV was full of them, and I lost interest early on. And I've never seen the John Sturges THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, though I love the score.
Likewise, there are a LOT of foreign films I've never seen, French, German, and I've only seen a very few films by Ingmar Bergman. I did see THE SEVENTH SEAL, and enjoyed it very much, but haven't seen too many of his other films.
And there are TONS of "classic" silent films I have yet to see, and those are just the ones still available; it's said that at least half of all silent films have disintegrated.
I could probably add more at some point.

I have you know that Hugh Marlowe was for years on a daytime soap I used to watch religiously, and I had no problem with him. My my, such hostility!
