I have a few CD's of music by this formerly active composer, e.g. 'To Dance With A White Dog' (my favourite); 'Madame Sousatzka'; 'The Innocent'; and a 'Gouriet - Film Music 1991-1992' compilation.

I particularly love his music for 'Madame Sousatzka' and 'To Dance With A White Dog'.

Well, earlier today I Googled him and discovered that he is now a Queen's Counsel at the English Bar! It appears that he graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Royal College of Music) and was called to the Bar in 1974. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 2006.

The English Bar's gain is Film Music's loss...

Anyone know what caused him to change career path?

Paul

I've been in communication with him, but haven't asked why he stopped composing. Yes he is in the UK as at attorney. VERY gifted composer and a sweet guy. I'd love to see him get back into it or one of these labels do some more scores by him. To Dance is my favorite by far by him.

I remember seeing the mediocre 1992 movie Timescape that had a Gouriet score.

Judging by the comments from some of his legal-eagle colleagues it would seem that he is as successful (if not more so!) in the legal field as he was in the world of film music composition. It looks like he is definitely lost to the legal world, at least for the immediate future. What a pity!

I am very touched by your kind (and over-generous) comments. There was a miscellany of family reasons that necessitated my returning to the UK - but I do miss the fun of scoring films.

If I may say so, I hope not too immodestly, I think that in addition to those mentioned by you, my best scores were for the Martin Donovan films "Seeds of Tragedy", "Mad at the Moon" and "Death Dreams" (which was a deliberate homage to Bernard Herrmann), along with the Vanessa Redgrave film "They Watch". I wrote a score in the style of Handel (-ish) for the John Schlesinger film "A Question of Attribution", and was delighted to read on IMDb that the score was wrongly attributed to Handel himself!

If anyone knows of a DVD of "Seeds of Tragedy" I would pay handsomely for it!

Hello Gerald,
Peter Hackman here. We were in touch about To Dance With The White Dog and you we communicated through email a while ago. Still a huge fan and thank you so much for the To Dance CD promo as I know it was your LAST one. Means so much. I hope at some point you can dabble in film scoring again. You had a unique voice and knew how to write interesting music that was at the same time, memorable. Best to you in London!
