Quartet Records presents its two new releases:

THE GAMBLER
Music Scored and Conducted by Jerry Fielding
Limited edition of 1000 units

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures are proud to present the world premiere release of Jerry Fielding’ masterful score for The Gambler.

Karel Reisz’s 1974 film The Gambler tells the story of Axel Freed (James Caan), a bright young literature professor with a severe gambling addiction who finds himself in deep water with the wrong people. As the film’s tagline puts it: “For $10,000 they break your arms. For $20,000 they break your legs. Axel Freed owes $44,000.” The narrative, which follows Axel as he careens from one crisis to the next, remains one of the most compelling and personal depictions of addiction ever committed to film—aided by an outstanding cast that includes Paul Sorvino, Lauren Hutton, Morris Carnovsky and Jacqueline Brookes.

One of The Gambler’s most praised assets is its powerful orchestral score from composer Jerry Fielding. The character of Axel Freed (like screenwriter James Toback, who modeled the role after himself) has a passion for the music of Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (1860–1911), whose work is regarded by many as the apotheosis of the late-Romantic period. Fielding based almost his entire score on Mahler’s classic “Symphony No. 1 in D major” (also extracting material from the controversial Blumine movement). The symphony provided a broad range of material to work with, from darkly brooding and turbulent passages to incredibly beautiful, songlike melodies. Fielding brought his own distinctive voice to several cues, and also provided a wide variety of original source music. The resulting score is a fascinating and totally unique experience, described by the critics as “elegantly oppressive” (The New Yorker), “brilliant” (New York Magazine) and “excellent, making the point that a contemporary urban drama can be underscored to great effect without tinny transistor radio source excerpts or mickey-mouse rock riffs” (Variety).

This album represents the first release of the complete score that Fielding conceived for the film. (A suite of 20 minutes was previously released by Bay Cities on a 1992 album, part of a series dedicated to Fielding's work.) For this edition, which runs 78 minutes, Quartet had access to tapes containing the recording sessions in stereo, vaulted in good condition in the Jerry Fielding collection at Brigham Young University (BYU). The package includes a 20-page full-color booklet, with liner notes and a track-by-track analysis by John Takis.

FEAR
Music Composed and Conducted by Henry Mancini
Limited edition of 1000 units

World premiere release of forgotten and surprising Henry Mancini’ thriller score from 1990, one of its lastest music efforts.

Cayce Bridges is a psychic investigator whose special ability enables her to connect to murderers even while they commit their crimes. Four years after solving her breakthrough case, Cayce wants to establish herself as a writer of fiction, but A new series of grisly murders bring her out of retirement. There’s one catch however – the serial killer also has psychic abilities which he uses to contact Cayce for a perverted game of cat-and-mouse. The film’s Hitchcockian finale takes Cayce to a carnival, where she must face her biggest fear in the Hall of Mirrors. The elusive Shadow Man is ready for a final showdown…

Written and directed by Rockne S. O'Bannon (Alien Nation, Farscape), Fear was an effective thriller that combined the world of serial killers with psychic connections. Tagging alongside the ride was Henry Mancini, who provided one of his most daring and unusual scores for the movie. Combining the mistuned pianos of Wait Until Dark or Experiment in Terror, echoes from the oppresive score for The Night Visitor with the spiritual legacy of his rejected Frenzy score, Mancini combines chilling textures, disturbing atmospheres, electronic overdues and clever in-jokes to create a thriller scores that was unfairly neglected in his career so far. Mancini even planned to have his score released by Silva Screen, but the release fell through when Fear didn't premiere in cinemas. The only piece available so far was a re-recording of “Casey's Theme” on the compilation album Mancini in Surround.

Quartet Records presents the complete score, including some chilling and Hitchcock-flavored source music. The 12-page full color booklet, includes liner notes by Gergely Hubai, who discuss the making of the film based on an original interview with director Rockne S. O'Bannon and give a track-by-track analysis to this rarely seen film.

Both titles are availables for Pre-Order now. CDs will ship the first week of May.

Oh yes, I quite like this batch. Late 80s / 90s Mancini and any Jerry Fielding are among my faves.

How true! We had really a Fielding dry spell for some years but 2013 has simply been great so far.

I'll probably grab the Manicini though I have yet to grab last few Mancini scores since there have been so many.

Not a Fielding fan.

Very taken by the 'Fear' samples, though I have to say I absolutely loath carnival music in horror scores (the only exception being Pennywise's theme) big grin good they put those at the end.

I'm guessing Fear was timed with the premiere of Defiance (the creator of Defiance directed Fear).

Not to be rude, but why in the world would anyone possibly care to time it this way?

great, slow year for me so far (my goldsmith stack is high enough thankyou), but here's a mancini i can embrace, and a wide-ranging fielding, love that recurring phrase from the second sample, very moody. both ordered.

Wow--I never would have believed we would get the complete Mancini score for FEAR on CD. Caught this on Cinemax WAY back when, and was surprised to find this straight-to-cable film so entertaining and astonished that it had this highly effective score by Henry Mancini of all people.

THE GAMBLER, in it's complete form and in stereo, is also very welcome.

Thanks, Quartet.

For a moment I thought this was the Fear with Alyssa Milano, which in no way dilutes this one!

Now that's how to properly credit source material. Unlike, say, Escape to Victory...

Great work, Quartet.
