Tonight, I listened to a sampler CD titled "NORWAY FILM COMPOSERS." I was captivated by two cues by Norwegian Film Composer GAUTE STORAAS from the film ELIAS AND THE ROYAL YACHT.

I have tried eBay Norway, Amazon, and Googled Planet Earth without success. I just e-mailed the Norwegian composer (reply is pending), but I thought that I would give our FSM Message Board buddy Thor an appeal also.

You can hear three of the cues at: www.FILMCOMPOSERS.no
Just click on Gaute Storaas.

Apparently, there was a TV series ELIAS, THE LITTLE RESCUE BOAT, which had a CD.

Gaute Storaas composed a full blown orchestral score for the animated feature"Elias and the Royal Yacht". (Nominated for best Norwegian film score 2007). Prior to that, scored the tv series "Elias, the little Rescue Boat", which was nominated for Emmy, and is sold to about 15 countries. The CD with music from the show was nominated for Spellemannsprisen, (the norwegian grammy,) last year.

I'm (hopefully) waiting to hear from the composer.

So Thor, I'm asking if you know of this music and if there is any way you can help me find it.
And I'll be glad to help you any way I can.

it seems some promo cds went out with a norway newspaper. (it may be a step in the right direction?)

It looks to me like they were "storyteller" CDs with narration issued with the newspaper Dagbladet.
But it's a start.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, Ron.

Gaute is a fine composer who I met a few months ago. He actually had his music from ELIAS performed live in a concert on Norwegian film music -- by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Sadly, we didn't talk about any soundtrack release of the music.

There are four cues at his website:

Maybe I'll meet him again in April for a film music symposium in Trondheim. I'll ask him then.

I see that cdon.com has a few albums. I'm not sure how much of it is songs and how much is score:

Aha! I knew you would come through, Thor. What a coincidence that you've already met him! I'd like you to order all of the CDs (looks like three) for me. I tried the Bing Norwegian-to-English translator with so-so results. That's 129 + 129 + 169 Kroner for the three, whatever that is in US Dollars or whatever currency, plus mailing, plus extras. E-mail me privately for working out the details.

Hell, if I lived in Boston you could sleep in MY house June 8th! smile

By the way, I did e-mail Gaute and he did e-mail me back the very next day. What a nice guy he is!
I think I better keep my mouth shut anymore. But e-mail me, Thor, and I'll fill you in privately.

Having just watched A MAN CALLED OVE yesterday, I just have to bring this back... such a brilliant score just has to be released and heard! Or have I missed anything since this thread was started?

I will definitely check anything with his name on it!

I assume you're all aware of his recent score to BIRKEBEINERNE, which featured a fantastic opening song? Very "viking". It has its own thread here:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=114649&forumID=1&archive=0

I just came back from Cannes, where I hung out with Gaute and some other Nordic composers, but I didn't ask about any CD releases of ELIAS -- which I see that I promised earlier in this thread. Sorry about that!

This is an old thread, but I just listened to Storaas's HALVDAN VIKING (2018) and it is really excellent.

I honestly thought Gaute Storaas had scored a film called THOR: I NEED YOUR HELP.

Always nice to see some foreign buzz about Gaute.

We nominated his score for the Swedish 2019 TV series BRYLLUP, BEGRAVNING OCH DOP [WEDDING, FUNERAL AND BAPTISM] for the Harpa award, and he actually won it in Berlin back in February.

I don't think it has a soundtrack yet, but it really should have. Excellent score!

I found the comments here intriguing, so I looked for anything available here in the U.S. by Gaute Storaas. I was able to get (a download) of BIRKEBEINERNE, which I am listening to right now.

It is very good, in the modern pulsing-strings-background style.

If anyone knows of anything else available by this interesting composer, please let us all know.

Thanks.

Louis

I actually think BIRKEBEINERNE is one of his least interesting scores, outside the epic song and a couple of other tracks.

We have alluded to some other good ones in this thread.

Check out EN MAN SOM HETER OVE [A MAN CALLED OVE] - another one we nominated for the Harpa award: https://open.spotify.com/album/2cD7lCGz1R2PRWYjhFUvqk?si=haPHOQ_cTB2sqHv2Z_23Qw

NINA'S CHILDREN is a gorgeous little score with an occasional SCHINDLER'S LIST vibe: https://open.spotify.com/album/3GvtheNnYBM8sYN1qUkVv6?si=ddkRl4PDSdSSjryJEhXLRg

His ELIAS scores are melodic and old-school symphonic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO9gA-KsxWQ

Here's the nomination video for his aforementioned BRÖLLUP, BEGRAVNING OCH DOP:

Norwegians may also remember him as the composer of the intro of TV 2's film airings in the 90s:
