I just rewatched this film last night, and I was touched by the tender score by none other than Jerry Goldsmith himself. I looked for the score on Amazon and found that it has long been out of print from an old March 1990 CD release from Varese Sarabande. Some resellers are charging as high as $240 to $387 for a new copy and $85 plus for used copies and the score is bare bones to boot - OUCH! It's time for a new release of this beautiful score.

Doug or Roger (don't remember which) posted in response to a P2 thread on the Intrada board about three or 4 years ago. It was a cryptic message that, when read between the lines, confirms it.

I've got a sealed original release of Psycho II (in the original long cardboard box). Bids, anyone? Shit - I don't know - I've spent a lot already this week.

Here's the message, its from Doug, on April's fool 2011...
If my memory serves me... I do recall chat "Scream Of Love" co-written by Burwell and David Sanborn from PSYCHO III received an extended 12" single release. I would love it if, say BSX, could license an expanded presentation of the original album with more score cues and the contents of that remix single. 8)
Meaning no dis-respect to the fine folks at BSX... but why would you hope they'd release this and post it on our Forum when we're the label currently working with both Universal and UMG to ge these things out? Wouldn't you hope to see US doing it? Just curious. --Doug Hell Yeah! I emailed Intrada today and asked. I'll let you know their response.

I'll raise you to wishing expanded releases of Psycho II, Psycho III & a premiere release for Psycho IV, the latter by Graeme Revell and also a good candidate for a long overdue release! I like Psycho IV also, but it is not in the same level of II and III. Some good recordings of the original Psycho and some good original material from Revell, but the two do not really match - similar to what happened in Basic Instinct 2. Each score is very different as are the movies; in all honesty I felt Burwell's score for Psycho III first time I heard it was nowhere near the class of the first two, aside from "Maureen in the Desert", most of the score is very cheesy. But it has grown on me since. Goldsmith's score isn't without its flaws either, some of the synth cues are a bit out there. But I'd still want to hear a complete release, if only for the great Norman Bates theme. I agree, I just think that II and III are more consistent/have a more strong personality than IV. II remains one of my favourite Goldsmith's scores, it works very well in the picture and have a beautifull theme. III, on the other hand, was very innovative for its time, with some synth/ambient scoring mixing very unusual sounds, voices... But also having a fantastic theme for Maureen/Norman and great tracks. For me it was also a kind of a disapointment when I saw the film and did not find the familiar strings for the murder motiv during the killings nor the great theme of II, but it has grown very much with me since. Well I just love II and III much more than IV, but would welcome if IV is also released!
