Eon Productions confirmed today that Sam Mendes will not direct the next Bond film. Which means we most likely will not see the return of Thomas Newman as well. If the new director does not insist on "his own" composer, David Arnold will likely be back.

This is good news to me. Preferred Arnold to Newman.

That's too bad because I preferred Newman to Arnold.

I think the press release only said that Sam Mendes won't be back for the next movie. The rest, including David Arnold's return, is speculation that doesn't seem to be based on anything (yet).

If Newman doesn't return, I welcome more fresh blood on the composing front more rather than a return to David Arnold. (Whose score for Tomorrow Never Dies is the only one of his I really enjoyed.)

I agree with you.

Skyfall was one of the better Bonds since The Spy Who Loved Me, but I can only take so much of Bond being the "Judi Dench Show". Thank heaven that's over with. Since Skyfall ended with a setup for the classic M-Moneypenny framework to the shows, let's hope EON gets back to the tightly structured action, villian, and women approach that made Bond in the first place. Bond was not conceived to be the centerpiece of bloated character epics. He's a global Phillip Marlowe/Sam Spade. Let's hope EON comes to remember that.

You are kidding yourself to think that Newman was going to become the full-time Bond composer. He only got the job because Arnold was busy with the Olympics and only was intended to be a temporary option. Also, Newman's age would have likely made Eon turn him down for further installments.

Newman's involvement in Skyfall had nothing to do with Arnold's commitment to the Olympics. He was specifically requested by Mendes. It's well documented.

I'll be gutted if Arnold comes back. We've SO moved on from that.

Not true. David Arnold admitted on Twitter that he didn't score Skyfall because Mendes wanted Newman.

Mendes not doing Bond 24 makes Newman's return less likely but does not mean it's impossible.

In the statement, Mendes said he hopes to return to Bond in the future. Broccoli and Wilson recprocated the sentiment.

Even if it's not on Bond 24, do not rule out Newman scoring Bond again in the future.

Exactly. Thomas Newman is still a little puppy in composer years, even if he has already given us a couple decades of awesomeness.

If Arnold returns (and ya know... I wouldn't mind), I hope he remembers to dial it back a bit the way Newman did.

Newman is nearing his sixties and Eon likes having young guys as their associated composers (Barry was nearing 30 when he was hired and Arnold was just starting out when he was hired in 1997). If there is a future composer for the franchise, it's going be a guy from the current crop of rising composers who has enough time on his hands. Newman has neither the youth or the time.

Superb. Sums up the over rated film. But to be fair to Mendes he is not the real problem. The makers need to ditch those writers who keep turning in the same daft stories.

You know who would also be too old for Bond according to Buscemi logic: Nearly every major composer.
