Well, everybody has their own taste. Mine says, "Crap". And it also adds: I don't want to ever again hear about hos simplistic Philip Glass is; I've heard plenty deeper and more complex than this.
While this score started out as Murphy's rejected CROSSING OVER music, John has significantly reworked it into a standalone album and it's practically unrecognizable in places as the film score it started out as. If you're trying to judge the songs and eventually the album as a piece of film scoring, you'll be hugely disappointed. That being said, I think the track he just released is all kinds of awesome. John is one of the most original voices in modern film scoring (sadly on an extended break from scoring) and he would punch a hole through the ceiling to hear himself described as a second rate Philip Glass.
It never ceases to amaze me that the guys who post on this board are not the slightest bit cognizant that their posts are being read not only by the composers themselves, but also by the many filmmakers and producers who work with them. Show some class.
And it's released! You can listen to it on Spotify
Thank you very much for the notice Trent! This first track is really cool, I really want Murphy back out there scoring projects with his unique influences.
Giving this a listen now, and it's vintage, unfiltered Murphy! Pretty sure it's CROSSING OVER. There's an interesting article with the director of that film discussing how the Weinstein's butchered it in post-prod:
IFMCA member Synchrotones is running a competition, in collaboration with John Murphy, in which you can win a signed physical CD of Murphy’s recent album “Anonymous Rejected Filmscore”.
Just got this, it's really good! I'm not usually a fan of fuzz guitar, but here I do. It also has some spinechillingly gorgeous cues like "How to Leave Your Body" and "Dead Ballerina".
Are we any closer to knowing which film this score was rejected from by now? Someone said CROSSING OVER earlier. Are you talking about the 2009 film which was eventually scored by Mark Isham?
It can't be any other, unless he has another rejected mystery film. He said recently it was from a film six years ago. I think he's getting his years off a little.
