Here's Lalo's "People Alone" Love Theme from THE COMPETITION.

One of my favorite Lalo Schifrin Movie Love Themes. The Love Theme song "People Alone" with lyrics by Will Jennings was nominated for a Best Song Oscar and was sung by Dionne Warwick on the Oscar Telecast. It did not win. Lalo's score was nominated also for a Golden Globe.

Listen in the last seconds of this piece at 2:18. Is Lalo giving Homage to John Williams, Steven Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss? The first 4 notes that he repeats and repeats on the piano seem to be calling the Mother Ship in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. And Amy Irving who stars with Dreyfuss, was Spielberg's first wife as well. Interesting.

And a few cues incorporating the Love Theme. Interesting note. The first four notes of the theme are identical to Dave Grusin's Love Theme for HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1978) THE COMPETITION was released in 1980.

Very emotional song that works from Lalo, Film also was not very successful at the box office. It was one of those films that i saw in the movie houses , really enjoyed the music. left the theatre , went to the record store, SAM GOODY,[Rockefeller center] and picked up the LP.

Here's a better quality version of the song, "People Alone" sung by Randy Crawford:

Initial ads for the film in 1980 stated a soundtrack LP was coming from Columbia Classics (and most likely was to feature more of the classical pieces from the film) but instead was released by MCA who was doing releases from Columbia films at the time (i.e. TESS by Philippe Sarde).

There was a CD issued in Japan but it was always very expensive and is long out of print. (I could kick myself for not spending the $30 to get one when I saw it at Tower Records in West Hollywood.)

If the score were to be reissued, I would guess Intrada would be most likely to do it as they have a relationship with both Universal (MCA) and Sony (Columbia).

I finally saw the film for the first time a few months ago. Quite enjoyable IMO. The early use of Dolby Stereo helped the many musical passages considerably. I have the soundtrack on cassette, but I'd welcome a CD release before the cassette bites the dust.

Beautiful tune, beautiful song. To this day I can not understand how or why it did not become better known.

Sorry to say, that is life. If we were to pile up every nice song and nice music [cds or vinyl records] on top of each other that didn't get alot of exposure, that straight pile would reach into outer space.

Had I seen it at Tower on the Sunset Strip (my home away from home) I would have bought it. I do have the Randy Crawford song, which was included on a compilation of movie songs I once bought, but still only have the LP of the complete soundtrack, and I almost never play LPs anymore. I had noticed a while back they were offering the movie on DVD in a burn-on-demand sort of way, and it wasn't cheap -- but I would have paid the price had it been a standard studio-released production. Always liked that movie, and a late friend of mine has a cameo as one of the piano contestants in a rehearsal room, madly running his fingers across the keyboard.

There are some songs that have identical opening 3 notes.
"Misty" and "Ebb Tide", "Moon River" and "Goldfinger" for example.

Thanks, Roy, but I DO have the song itself, but am mainly concerned with getting the instrumental soundtrack on CD (and in a big closet have the soundtrack LP). I've long had a sentimental attachment to that movie.

Follow-up: I broke down and bought the made-to-order DVD of "The Competition"from Kritzerland, and, as I wrote elsewhere, I was afraid that it might turn out to be a DVD sourced from a VHS tape. Nope, not at all. It's a fine copy, very clear, with very good stereo audio (not surround), and I'm just delighted to be able to finally add it to my collection.
