A few months ago when talking about the Trek TV series, I remember MV posting that he would do Enterprise next, skipping over Voyager temporarily. So we know that's up next (unless a surprise Volume 2 of TNG comes out).

No time table has been given, but I assume the earliest would be after the Paramount Trek freeze.

So, I just thought maybe a thread talking about the scores and which choices to include, would be interesting.

Since the series was short-lived, and not every episode score would be chosen, we have a refined list of titles and they can be given more complete treatments (some of these scores deserve no less).

I absolutley hated the series, so I have never to this day heard half the scoring, so I can't make a thorough list of choices. And so to it; in order of series run:

"Civilization" (Jay Chattaway)
I remember this being a low-key, enjoyable effort.

"Silent Enemy" (Velton Ray Bunch)
An excellent score with electronic percussive elements, with paced tension and some big sounding action work, especially one alternate action cue.

"Vanishing Point" (Jay Chattaway)
I remember this bold score had some pretty strong moments, which I vaguely recall seeming to channel the more filmatic J.N.H. Shyamalan work.

"Horizon" (Mark McKenzie)
His only effort for the series, but what an effort! Originally he had a five minute suite on his website (before he had to take it down, later putting up some short excerpts, which I think too are now down) and this suite began with this soft woodwind playing, guitar, kind of sad, yearning, very much like a beautiful combo of Delerue and Goldsmith.
Then some paced, dramatic action music in a very Goldsmith-like mature vein, followed by some closing bold music that to me clearly indicates a studying of Goldsmith's Trek scoring approaches and even orchestration. This is a TOP NOTCH effort, no less than the complete score should be included.

"Similatude" (Velton Ray Bunch)
Another great score from a composer whom just isn't getting the assignments or work since the series ended, that he should.
As I recall, this was one of two episode scores that won him awards (one or both being Emmy's; the other I think was "Silent Enemy").

There's some off the beaten path action music that's terrific, and the lush, soft and at times bolded finale cue is nothing less than some of TV finest scoring ever.

"Proving Ground" (John Frizzell)
I wish I could comment more on it, but all I remember is liking what I heard. I knew when I heard it that this was not a series regular, and sure enough, it was his first score for the series.

I've not heard anything from the final season, so I have to stop there. I think that pretty much fills up 2CD's.

"Enterprise" took some chances and brought in some new composers. My only regrets, I obtained a submission demo by Shirley Walker so she might be considered to work on the show, but apparently they never hired her. Can you imagine if they had! And another McKenzie effort would have been nice.

I would just like the two Tyler scores in full, anything else would be a bonus.

Yes, Brian Tyler's "Regeneration" score would be a must. As long as it included that, I'd be satisfied. There was a lot of great music, though, so no doubt I'd be happy with anything they chose to release. "Azati Prime" would be another good one, too. I like the music for the big climactic battle in that episode, where the NX-01 seriously gets the crap kicked out of it by the Xindi.

I honestly don't really buy many television series releases, because they tend to be more expensive due to being multi-disc. But Enterprise is definitely one I would buy. Great music, great series.

Anything Season 3 and onwards, especially from Jay Chattaway and Velton Ray Bunch. Not especially interested in the Tyler scores as they sound just like all his others (and promos are out there already for them). McCarthy does some fine work in Season 3 too (my favorite season of an otherwise wildly uneven show).

Season 4 has some of the best scores but a lot of them are synthesized thanks to budget cutbacks.

Guys,

Need I remind folks of Dennis's and Kevin Kiner's score for "Through a Mirror Darkly pts 1&2"?

That could be a CD unto itself.

Ford, do you know the involvement of Kiner on those Season 3 and 4 scores? Was it just to handle the elecctronics (as they sound like pure McCarthy and I know a lot of those scores were either synth or had synth elements in them)? Just curious.

i also want to chime in for a lot of season 3 and 4 material. i do love the regeneration score a lot too but am unfamiliar with tyler's other effort. but as a great as regeneration is it's not the center of the series either. the xindi storyline had some great action cues throughout. as far as i'm concerned the only cd of the pilot can stand for season 1. let's get a 3-discer out there that gives 2-4 their due.

Walker not being hired does not surprise me at all. We're talking about "Star Trek: The Beige Generation" here. She wrote music that was MUCH too interesting for that crop of vanilla merchants to get their timid corporate heads around.

No offence to the composers (who were just following a brief and earning a living), but my advice when it comes to latter Trek music is: stick with pre '69 scores. With the possible exception of Ron Jones' work, you can probably dump the rest into the cupboard you keep your tubs of polyfilla in.

So which Enterprise episode score would you like to see on this release?

I would nominate as outstanding scores from the series:

"Vox Sola" (Paul Baillargeon)
"Horizon" (Mark McKenzie)
"Proving Ground" (John Frizzell)
"Canamar" (Brian Tyler)
"Similitude" (Velton Ray Bunch)

I would love to see the End Credits included, as well as the Rura Penthe cues from "Judgement" and a no brainer would be "In A Mirror Darkly (1,2)" The Vulcan story arc had some good music, as well as the Augments story. Come to think of Season 4 had some good music! But I would love the score to E2 from Season 3, Storm Front part 1 and 2, These Are the Voyages, etc. Enterprise had some wonderful music. Of course the other no brainers would be the material from the "promos" floating about out there. smile

Damn true story right there. I just hope that when time comes for Voyager to be given its album, "Scorpion" is given a nice big treatment (like the last disc of the DS9 set). By far, my favorite score of the series.

I don't remember which episodes I liked aside from Regeneration (one of Brian Tyler's two scores for the series) but do remember the Enterprise music as being MUCH more dynamic than Voyager's or TNG's. I would definitely prize a copy of its music.

I hope Voyager still comes. I'm more interested in that as I actually watched the majority of that series.

I'll second/third/whatever the complete score for "In A Mirror, Darkly", which I've encountered before as an unmentionable. Everything from the re-orchestrated version of Goldsmith's 'First Contact' (dunno if it was intentional, and the technical aspects of music aren't my specialty so I'm probably using the wrong terminology to describe this, but to my ear it brought the counterpoint from the original version more into the forefront, which really worked well for the whole Mirror Universe angle) and the "mirror" theme song all the way to the last cue where the U.S.S. Defiant is orbiting Earth with Hoshi announcing her new reign as Empress... I want that whole damn thing as part of any comprehensive Enterprise release. Those were awesome episodes, and an awesome score.

Although Enterprise had its drawbacks as a series, and its share of baffling ideas from the writers, I discovered upon a second viewing of the complete series (from the DVD releases) just how many things it also managed to get right, many of which I just didn't notice when watching it as it first aired. It was a heck of a lot better, on the whole, than the abysmal Voyager.

Although I know it'll be many months before we can even think about hoping to see an Enterprise set from LLL, I'm still eagerly anticipating that day.

Whoa I wish I would be as optimistic as you guys about upcoming releases. But I hope the best too... hope it works out. smile

Same here. I might be in the minority but I liked both the show and it's music more than Enterprise.

I just hope that when time comes for Voyager to be given its album, "Scorpion" is given a nice big treatment (like the last disc of the DS9 set). By far, my favorite score of the series.

So yeah, Enterprise.
Anyway, this would be my "wishlist", as far as the music is concerned:

"The Andorian Incident" (Paul Baillegeon)
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of most of Paul Baillargeon's scores. "The Siege of AR-558" would be one major exception, though, and this score here I think is one of my favourites of his contributions too. I really liked how he scored the locale, in this case the monastery.

"Desert Crossing" (Velton Ray Bunch)
The Music for the Geskana Match. Man, when I first watched the episode I couldn't really believe it. Finally, some music which has some active part in the storytelling instead of just being there in the background. Outstanding stuff - there's no music like that elsewhere in the series.

"Canamar" & "Regenaeration" (Brian Tyler)
These are probably no-brainers, I wonder? Wouldn't mind seeing these complete. I think the action music in both episodes is pretty outstanding, powerful and creative. I think the regular composers were astonished with what Tyler could get away with. I like Canamar especially, because it has a strong theme in there, unlike Regeneration. I wonder if this was his own decision or someone there said after Canamar "No themes please".

"Horizon" (Mark McKenzie)
Well, what Justin Boggin said. Great score. I wonder if it would fit, but if yes, I'd probably put it on a disc with the two Tyler-scores, a approach similar to TNG's Disc 3.

"Anomaly" (Jay Chattaway)
The cue from the scene when the pirates board the ship and steal all the stuff. Pretty unique (and very percussive) action cue, unlike any other. I for one like it quite a lot!

"North Star" (Jay Chattaway)
What Duck a l'Orange said. I'd like to have especially the shootout, that final showdown-thing. Love that theme in there. (Overall I found Chattaway's themes rather catchy all around. smile )

"Azati Prime" (Jay Chattaway)
The cues related to the attack on the Enterprise - I think there are two? Pretty epic stuff.

"Storm Front Part II" (Dennis McCarthy)
The music from the last act. Pretty great action stuff by McCarthy.

"United" (Jay Chattaway)
The first cue in the episode, and all the upcoming ones which feature the theme he introduces right in the start (If I remember correctly, it appears one or two times after that again in the episode.)

"Affliction" (Velton Ray Bunch)
What Duck a l'Orange said. wink

"All Good, err no. What you leave... err, that's not it either. Whatever." (Dennis McCarthy)
The last craptastic episode had at least some good music. I'd like to have the music from that stupid shoot-out scene and off course, that last cue from the show, where McCarthy combines the TOS-,TNG-, and Enterprise-themes.

Ah, and yes, I wouldn't mind seeing that instrumental version from "Where my Heart will take me" which was used only during the end credits of the pilot episode. I don't really care for the other versions (lol) but I guess it's really unlikely they won't be included, so... whatever. xD

Baillargeon's best Trek score is "Vox Sola" and the Act V cue at the very least deserves a release. It's tremendous. He also did solid action scoring in "Raijin." I'm not a big fan of his but he did some great work in Enterprise that deserves recognition (as did most of the composers, once their shackles were released starting some time in season 2).

As far as pre-Season 3, let's see...

Chattaway's "The Catwalk" has some great action scoring, as does "Cold Front". McCarthy's "Stigma" has many highlights. I've also always liked his cliffhanger cue that ends the first season in "Shockwave, Part I". David Bell has a great little score in "Dear Doctor" and a very nice climax cue in "Terra Nova."

I don't think any of these scores particularly needs a complete release, given how many short cues there are (for scene transitions, especially). Just the highlights would be amazing.
