Les Miserables -- One of my top Poledouris wants, in fact quite possibly my favorite Poledouris score! We all know how disappointing the original album on Mandalay/Hollywood Records was -- not the greatest sound quality, poor packaging (the track lengths were totally off), and the score lumped into four lengthy "suites" making it difficult to go to your favorite cue (even though I admit it's certainly not a problem to sit through the whole score!) This, perhaps his last true *masterpiece*, absolutely deserves a definitive presentation with more manageable tracks, remastered sound, great packaging and liner notes! Since the album is owned by Disney it is Intrada we must look to, as Doug recently confirmed they can do Hollywood Records stuff (specifically mentioning Goldsmith's Ghost and the Darkness). Yavar This is especially a bummer for me, because I recently checked out the suites on youtube and really, really liked them. It's interesting to me that this thread is nearly five years old and Intrada and/or Varese haven't released this obviously magnificent score. Curious about the movie.

Why would Varese release it? I don't think they've ever expanded a Hollywood Records album, and while they have (on fairly rare occasion) expanded albums by other labels besides themselves (i.e. a DE of Stargate) I don't think they have done it for a while, thankfully concentrating their expansion efforts on titles they control in perpetuity which no other label can do...and they already do that too infrequently for a lot of people's taste. I wouldn't be surprised if it were on Intrada's list as they've expanded other Hollywood Records albums. But I know their Disney wish list is very long, and who knows where this would fall on their priorities? I really like the film. Of course it's nowhere near the book and takes a lot of liberties with that source material, but it's such a long novel and I don't know of an adaptation that doesn't. This one is an excellent production with really good performances and an amazing score, which is more than enough for me to forgive it any other faults. I recommend you give it a watch -- the score is superb in context. Yavar

I still think it's ridiculous this hasn't had a proper release.

The existing album is a reasonably-generous 49 minutes long (think of all the 29 minute albums Varese put out in the 90s!) and a great listen, actually. I can't think of any hugely important cue that was left off or anything. (It has been a while since I saw the film though.) It's just annoying to me that it's smushed into four long tracks as if it were a symphony, when it's really just a succession of cues like any other soundtrack album...it would have been nice if they were separated, but as I mentioned I love the whole score and would probably usually listen straight through anyway. But if I felt like including some highlights on a Poledouris compilation or something, they're more of a pain to extract than they should be. Yavar

Yavar Well, Filmtracks mentions a bootleg that IS ordered correctly and actually sounds better. However, not too big a fan of that kind of thing, personally. And I agree, I heard a couple of the suites from the abovementioned album and it is a really, really good score imo. Deserving of MUCH better treatment. Not sure what the hold up is.

I'm surprised Yavar has revived this yet, with the new Volume 3 from Dragon's Domain.

I was just getting to that. I removed Dolphin from my first post...I had somehow even omitted Tintorera. Remarkable that we're getting two *70s* scores of Basil's (composed on either side of Big Wednesday, though sadly not orchestral like it) on a 2-CD set for the price of one! Here's the good news for anyone who missed it! http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=129283&forumID=1&archive=0 Now fingers crossed for On Deadly Ground: The Deluxe Edition from Varese. Quigley Down Under. I know there was an expansion on Prometheus in 2006 and while I don't know if it is complete, it has been 17 years and the secondary market on this one is nuts! I'll always take more Poledouris.
