Heads up.
This has been posted all over the net in multimedia forums - Adobe seem to be allowing the free download of a large bunch of their software, BUT they are out-of-date versions from around 5-10 years ago. This includes the Audition sound editor. Even in its older V3 incarnation, it's regarded as one of the best sound editors on the planet.
I mention this here because some soundtrack enthusiasts like to tinker with their favourite scores - eg re-sequencing the new Star Trek release etc.
A couple of warnings - this is older, non-supported software, and there may be compatibility issues with newer operating systems.
Also, Adobe themselves seem to be a bit evasive about the actual legal status of these downloads. There appears to be no legal restrictions on the page itself, everything is directly downloadable, and registration serials are provided. Yet it's been reported that when pressed by potential users, Adobe give inconsistent answers about the software's status. The web page has obviously been getting a lot of hits, and Adobe has kept the page running, so it SEEMS to be ok. But caveat emptor all the same!
One theory is that Adobe are doing this either because of a screw up (unlikely) or because they want to capture the free media software market and snare a bunch of users who will potentially pay for an upgrade to the latest greatest versions (more likely and smart too).

Adobe Audition is a fantastic software. Also v 3.0 is very good. I know that a lot of people prefer Pro Tools but I am totally happy with Adobe Audition. It is also a lot cheaper than Pro Tools.

I'm using Audition 1.0 and it seems to do nearly everything I want. I wonder if moving to 3.0 is worth my while.
One person who asked what I used replied that he wished he had 1.0 because later versions took out stuff he thought useful.
Anyone else have an opinion differing from Counterpoint's, as far as 3.0?

Yes! They are for free, everything, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Acrobat etc. They may be a bit "old" (2005) but what does that actually mean for 99% of the users? It's pretty damn fine software and everything runs of course flawlessly on W7 64 Bit.
Reg. Audition 3: Actually, I still prefer V 1.5 because it has the, I don't know, most intuitive, nicest, easiest "handling" and look of all, and it still does everything your audio heart can wish for: Lp/CD conversions, recording everything off the net or your old audio cassettes, editing, mixing etc. Audition 3 has some better algorithms for stretching / pitching tracks so I use it just for that but basic editing is still 1.5.
I used it e.g. for editing together and mixing my own PSYCHO film version CD from the Varese rerecording - faster main title, combining those awful short tracks into a coherent listening experience and editing the finale (in the cellar and at the police station to the pulling out of the car) like it is heard in the film. Worked nicely, I should say!

Hmmm... strange. Adobe have left the door WIDE open and even provided the keys! What is this, some kind of honesty test on the entire internet community?! Crazy. If the above company statement is true then they could simply shut the page down, or issue a clear statement on that page saying "Do Not Download Unless You Are An Authorized User!" AFAIK, they haven't done either so far.
As Mr Goldsmith once (sort of) said "What's going on here... is that a rat?"
Well, the Photoshop CS2 that I downloaded is now up and running fine.
Maybe it will self-destruct in 30 days?
