Perfect review!
A little MV/RCP generic crap at the beginning and the end of the album. The rest is just weird boring etnowallpaper, which takes up 75% of the album. I am glad I cancelled my order in time.


I´m really no fan of MV. And maybe a bit too quick to dismiss scores because they are in a similar vein.

But AFTER EARTH did not strike me as particular MV-like. Neither did the rest of the score appear to me as "etnowallpaper".

Well, different tastes.

I agree. To me the MV style has more to do with synth or percussion that takes over a cue than anything else and there isn't much of that here.

There's a boatload of percussion in this score. But it's the Batman like string ostinati, power anthems and Inception like BLAAAARGS! that reek of RC/MV.

like you said before, it's a more modernistic score from JNH than we've seen, and the lyrical stuff with the piano undergirding much of it is quite impressive. JNH excels at lyricism.

I like it, but it's probably the least of the JNH efforts for Shamalamadingdong. It does have some more modernistic elements in it, but the actiony stuff is drawn from previous scores (no shocker, JNH just doing his thing, which apparently is cause for consternation).

But there are so many elements here that almost quote from previous Shyamalan/JNH collaborations. There are definitely passages that remind me of "SIGNS" and "THE SIXTH SENSE".

I'm not sure how to explain it other than it works well for me. To me though all the percussion used in the score is very tasteful in the mix and not overpowering. Plus the power anthem is quite solid.

I never said YOU can't enjoy it. If it's something that excites you then more power to you. I'm glad someone likes it. Unfortunately, JNH's more modern style turns me off.

I just finished listening to it a second time and enjoyed it much better this time around. It is very atmospheric but I kind of liked the focus on primitive and earthy sounds and experimental string effects. I love the track "Baboons"...very JNH.

I´ve had it: this is the last time I have bought a new JNH score from one of the big major labels. If they cannot get the sound right I´ll simply stop buying and will concentrate on old re-releases by Intrada or LLL. No brickwall limiting this time but still engineered-for-ipod-only... who allows something like this to be released to the market? I´m on the brink of sending it back - and yes, only because of the bad sound.


Finally got the CD in from Amazon. Sounds MUCH better than what I was streaming on Spotify before. Not sure what issues you're having, but I'm definitely not getting the 'mastered for ipod' vibe at all.

I have just been to see the film at a late night viewing here in the UK The theatre was pretty full surprisingly, given the condemnation I have read about the film. However, I am an admirer of Shyamalan's output apart from The last Airbender and am Luke warm about The Happening. But his latest offering I really enjoyed. I think the exposition of the character development needed to be fleshed out more fully and some of the dialogue was muddy. But the rest of the film I thought was excellent - beautiful photography and the way Shyamalan composes each scene is very reminiscent of Kubrick IMO. I find him to be the closest director to Kubrick, particularly with respect to 2001 in the construction of the film, it forces the viewer to engage with each scene and actively interpret it and so enter into the narrative. This is very Kubrick.

I cannot fathom why the film only received an aggragate of 11% on Rotten Tomatoes. Living on this side of the pond, perhaps I am missing something here. I had heard rumours that there is a personal dislike of the director. Is that true?

Personally, give me this film over Man of Steel any day.

The film score I also enjoyed immensely, very finely tuned to every scene in which it was required. And I too heard classic Newton Howard in there. I have immediately downloaded it onto my iPod and am buying the CD as well.

You knew EXACTLY how it would end even before they crashed on the ship.

Jayden fails to carry the film and Will is not his usually commanding self and mind you, he is suppose to be. He is almost lifeless instead of stern and stoic.

Interesting - I had the exact opposite impression. This film seems to fall into the category love it or hate it.

I know what you mean. I had that impression with Man of Steel, Batman Begins, The Avengers, Thor etc.

I think the problem in this film was that the incidents that shaped the two protagonists were not expounded clearly or thoroughly enough. I thought that the narrative thrust of the story was a derivation of incidents that shaped the two characters and because that was weakened so was the narrative. I didn't get a clear impression of why Will Smith's character was so restrained for example. I could get into Jayden's character's motivation more but it still was muddled due to, it seemed to me, mumbling dialogue. Perhaps the cinema speakers were not up to the job.

Having said that, I admired Shyamalan's compositional style of each scene, the camera work and photography were excellent and my experience of the story, although weakened, was still very, very enjoyable.

It was well directed and honestly... I've never thought M. Night to be a anything but a GREAT director [not crazy about him as a writer] but even from UNBREAKABLE the guy just knocked it out of the park.
