Laurence Rosenthal’s score for BRASS TARGET in my opinion is a great score only the 70’s could bring us – it’s pessimistic, gritty in his suspence and action orientated moments and has one of that melancholic love themes (for Sophia Loren) that are a standout.
The score in tone is comparable with Jerry Goldsmith’s score for THE CASSANDRA CROSSING – same gritty, pessimistic musical atmoshere and also a melancholic main theme (once again with Sophia Loren). Rosenthal’s score for BRASS TARGET comes as close as a score can get to Jerry Goldsmith’s typical mid/late 70’s scoring style in this genre.
As this marvellous score so far only was released on LP by Varese a long time ago, I may ask, if it is possible to get this score for a proper CD release one day to preserve it digitally? As the MGM movie is owned by Warner Brothers, I guess a CD release is possible.
I think the time has come for a CD release.
Dear Lukas, can this score released one day, or does Varese Sarabande hold the rights because of their LP? This would be a great title for one of your future projects as a producer maybe together with the Intrada or Varese Sarabande labels.
Warner Archive just released this and I bought it on a hunch. I had never heard of the film and it sounded interesting plus I loved the cast. I just watched it on Friday and loved it. I agree, the score is beautiful. A soundtrack release is a must!
I always mention this. With the Varese Encore series, I hope that this may be one of them. And, or... if the rights have become available, I really hope someone releases it.
For whatever's worth, I've spoken to both Mr. Townson and Chris Kuchler (The ownerr of VARESE) urging them to release this score be Mr. Rosenthal leaves this motal plane.
An Interesting footnote about BRASS TARGET, it was the first Major film studio release released by VARESE SARABANDE from a then brand new film.
That alone would be enough reason to put it out on CD and Digitally.
I dug this LP out of a used bin in a record store in Charlotte not too long ago. Kickass score.
This isn't evidence of anything, but it wouldn't be the first LP-only release I've dug out of the stacks in recent years, only to see it issued on CD a short time later.
These patterns in the universe tend to assert themselves eventually...
Thinking about this LP record made me realize the thing that hurt most about selling off my huge lp collection in 06, was all those nice Sarabande lp's with those nice looking covers and the smooth texture of the feel of those covers, They were great .

... They are quite lovely. I haven't sold any of mine, thankfully. As good as the Varese covers were/are... there are some magnificent imported lp's that really pulled out all the stops in production.
I really do hope that BRASS TARGET is released some day... I did just play it, and, such a knockout score.
I really hope that BRASS TARGET by Laurence Rosenthal is in Varese's next Club CD batch. This is a great 70's score which had a Varese LP release decades ago. And it would be a great hommage to Laurence Rosenthal, who according to Intrada's Douglass Fake also would like a CD release of his marvellous score (of course Douglass Fake and Lukas Kendall want it to be released on CD too).
